Missouribassman95 Posted March 1, 2015 Posted March 1, 2015 Hello, I understand there's been many threads about kayaks, but I was wondering if y'all kayakers could give me some advice. I definitely want to buy a kayak, but I've never fished out of one so I don't know much. I don't need anything super big or fancy, I just want to get out on water. I'm a college student so I don't have a whole lot to spend ($300-500), but I'm willing to splurge a little if it's worth the price. Is there anything you guys (or gals) would recommend? I was thinking about buying this one: http://www.dickssportinggoods.com/product/index.jsp?productId=31609916&cp=4406646.4413993.4414792.32954906 but I don't know for certain. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Quote
Big C Posted March 1, 2015 Posted March 1, 2015 That looks pretty good. I would check out the Ascends at BPS before you decide they're a good deal, and decent quality. I have the Ascend D10, it is good cheap kayak it doesn't track well at all, but I can comfortably stand on it like a paddle board, which is a huge plus with fishing. If you don't have good balance, or feel comfortable standing I wouldn't suggest it because that's the the best part of it. 3 Quote
Rhino68W Posted March 1, 2015 Posted March 1, 2015 I was in your shoes a few months back. I mustered up a few extra bucks and got an Ascend FS12T from BPS. It's awesome. Academy has some good deals right now on some different one so check them out if you're near one. 2 Quote

kjfishman Posted March 1, 2015 Posted March 1, 2015 Another thing to consider is adjustable foot pegs are more comfortable that foot wells. 1 Quote
Rhino68W Posted March 1, 2015 Posted March 1, 2015 Here is a video I made form my maiden voyage on the FS12T. I was able to stand up, but I'm not going to try and fish that way for a while. The thing I like about this kayak is that it has a lot of options for rigging, it holds my big but well, and it tracks pretty decent. It does weigh a lot so paddling might feel like a chore unless you're a stronger guy. I just bought an anchor trolley system and will soon be putting a video of that up so feel free to watch my page for it. Quote
Super User Darren. Posted March 1, 2015 Super User Posted March 1, 2015 If standing is a priority, you have pretty much upped your price/budget in order to get one that is super-stable. Now we all have different points of balance, centers of gravity, and so on. I'm shorter, so my center is lower. I have great balance in my Native Ultimate 12, and can stand and fish in pretty rough waters (white caps, high winds) without any fear of tipping. Your best bet is to find a kayak store near you and see if they have any yaks you can demo. OR, you can always add pontoons afterward that can enhance your ability to stand. So either of the options already suggested are good. You can also pound the pavement (so to speak) and look for a used Native Ultimate 12, a Wilderness Systems Ride, Wilderness Systems Commander, a Jackson Cuda, etc. These are all made for standing and fishing. BaitMonkey1984 Posted March 1, 2015 Posted March 1, 2015 I would also recommend that prior to purchasing one, you borrow a buddy's. I thought I would love kayak fishing, so kayaks were bought. I use the kayak for other things, but not fishing- I just can't do it comfortably and I have problems with too many rods/baits, it just want for me. Quote
Big C Posted March 1, 2015 Posted March 1, 2015 By the way, My D10t has crazy draft I can go places that are like 3" deep. Quote
Missouribassman95 Posted March 2, 2015 Author Posted March 2, 2015 Thank you everyone for the replies, this helps a lot! Quote
boostr Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 Check out the Feelfree Lure 10. At 36" wide very stable. Quote
yakingfisherman Posted March 4, 2015 Posted March 4, 2015 I'd suggest a fs12t from bass pro if you are looking for a kayak around 500 that is stable, built for fishing, and will allow you to carry a lot of gear. I have the bigger version (fs128t) and love it. It allows me to carry all my gear without feeling cluttered. It is stable and has a very wide platform. The fs12t should not be very different from my model. Don't forgot about the paddle. Don't go cheap! Quote
Super User buzzed bait Posted March 5, 2015 Super User Posted March 5, 2015 i had an ascend fs10 before upgrading to a wilderness ride 135. the ascends are VERY WELL MADE. solid boats for the money and are WAY above the models you will find at dick's sporting goods. for 300-500 the ascend line will be your best bet in my opinion, unless you can score a sweet deal on craigslist. just don't forget to factor in a decent paddle and a comfortable life jacket into the budget. good luck and don't rush into it. you will love it once you get out there! 1 Quote
