paul. Posted March 1, 2015 Posted March 1, 2015 the weather here has been brutal over the last couple of weeks (by mid-south standards anyway). so when i finally thought i might have a chance to go today, i went. when i arrived at the lake, i didn't know whether to try to launch the boat or try to drill a hole. there was still ice all over much of the lake. the part that wasn't frozen looked like coffee with cream from the deluge of rain we got last week. oh well, i've been skunked plenty of times before i thought. i actually managed a couple of very hard-earned 3 pounders though. these bit on back to back casts and i didn't get a sniff the rest of the trip. the first pic will show you what i was fishing about 50 yards from. funny thing is there might be spawning fish in this cove in about a month or so. oh well, sometimes any fish in tough conditions is better than a nice one in good conditions. 9 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted March 1, 2015 Global Moderator Posted March 1, 2015 We're at that terrible time of year. Ice is too thin to walk on, too thick to punch, power plants are going offline for maintenance, and the trout lakes aren't thawed yet I'd love to be able to get out and try to get a couple hard earned 3 pounders, nice work! 2 Quote
Super User Senko lover Posted March 1, 2015 Super User Posted March 1, 2015 Awesome job! I went out yesterday trying to catch a fish in the snow (and get my first new year fish), but nothing happened except some frozen hands. 1 Quote
Super User Dwight Hottle Posted March 1, 2015 Super User Posted March 1, 2015 Way to tough them out Paul. 1 Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted March 1, 2015 Super User Posted March 1, 2015 Nice work Paul - You're loving that rig . . . . A-Jay 1 Quote
Super User David P Posted March 1, 2015 Super User Posted March 1, 2015 Ice doesn't look like much fun, never had to deal with that out here! Glad you still managed a few nice ones! 1 Quote
RSM789 Posted March 1, 2015 Posted March 1, 2015 ... these bit on back to back casts and i didn't get a sniff the rest of the trip... That is the thing that drives me nuts about cold weather fishing. Not only is is it slow, but the bites aren't even spaced out a bit to break up the monotony. All your catching is usually in a 10 minute window, the other 7 hrs & 50 minutes is nothing but trying to keep warm. 1 Quote

paul. Posted March 2, 2015 Author Posted March 2, 2015 Nice work Paul - You're loving that rig . . . . A-Jay yep. you know it's funny. seems like every year i end up catching the majority of my fish on one bait. last year was the grass pig. looks like this yr. is gonna be the slither rig. 1 Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted March 2, 2015 Super User Posted March 2, 2015 I hear that Paul. I believe in the big fish power of the jig and I throw it a lot. And once I started tossing that rig around & began to understand just how truly versatile it is, that time doubled. And so did my average fish size. A-Jay 1 Quote
Super User everythingthatswims Posted March 2, 2015 Super User Posted March 2, 2015 Pretty work Paul. You have successfully defeated winter with that slither rig. Quote

A-Jay yesterday gave me more confidence in that rig (as if i needed more) than any of the other trips have simply because of the tough conditions. it's a safe bet i will have one tied on all year until i find something better, which i don't see happening anytime soon. i tried a regular jig yesterday too - por nada. and everythingthatswims - i don't know if i'd go as far as to say i've defeated winter with the rig, but it's made a heckuva dent. 1 Quote
Super User Darren. Posted March 2, 2015 Super User Posted March 2, 2015 Awesome fish, Paul! I like your rig, too. Might have to try adding a skirt to some soft plastics one of these days (non-jig). 1 Quote
Super User scaleface Posted March 2, 2015 Super User Posted March 2, 2015 Explain the rig. what is the small piece of plastic for ? Never mind, I get it .I remember you use a spring keeper on the bend and the plastic blocks the skirt from sliding on the hook . Quote
CJ Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 Ice coffee w/creamer must be an aquired taste. I think a couple 3lbers in cold, muddy water is impressive! Way to go! Quote
HookdUP Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 Nice I was debating in going on today and bitched out .... Tomorrow after work I will be trying at least in my little boat with my son for a couple hours since it'll be seventy .. Jerkbait and jigs day Quote
