the weather here has been brutal over the last couple of weeks (by mid-south standards anyway).  so when i finally thought i might have a chance to go today, i went.  when i arrived at the lake, i didn't know whether to try to launch the boat or try to drill a hole.  there was still ice all over much of the lake.  the part that wasn't frozen looked like coffee with cream from the deluge of rain we got last week.  oh well, i've been skunked plenty of times before i thought.

i actually managed a couple of very hard-earned 3 pounders though.  these bit on back to back casts and i didn't get a sniff the rest of the trip.  the first pic will show you what i was fishing about 50 yards from.  funny thing is there might be spawning fish in this cove in about a month or so.  oh well, sometimes any fish in tough conditions is better than a nice one in good conditions.

We're at that terrible time of year. Ice is too thin to walk on, too thick to punch, power plants are going offline for maintenance, and the trout lakes aren't thawed yet  :cry4:  I'd love to be able to get out and try to get a couple hard earned 3 pounders, nice work!

Awesome job! I went out yesterday trying to catch a fish in the snow (and get my first new year fish), but nothing happened except some frozen hands.

Ice doesn't look like much fun, never had to deal with that out here! Glad you still managed a few nice ones!

That is the thing that drives me nuts about cold weather fishing.  Not only is is it slow, but the bites aren't even spaced out a bit to break up the monotony.  All your catching is usually in a 10 minute window, the other 7 hrs & 50 minutes is nothing but trying to keep warm.

so true.  but muddy and cold = low expectations.  i guess small windows  > no windows.  lol.

yep.  you know it's funny.  seems like every year i end up catching the majority of my fish on one bait.  last year was the grass pig.  looks like this yr. is gonna be the slither rig.

I hear that Paul.

I believe in the big fish power of the jig and I throw it a lot.

And once I started tossing that rig around & began to understand just how truly versatile it is, that time doubled.

And so did my average fish size.

yesterday gave me more confidence in that rig (as if i needed more) than any of the other trips have simply because of the tough conditions.  it's a safe bet i will have one tied on all year until i find something better, which i don't see happening anytime soon.  i tried a regular jig yesterday too - por nada.

and everythingthatswims - i don't know if i'd go as far as to say i've defeated winter with the rig, but it's made a heckuva dent.  :eyebrows:

Awesome fish, Paul! I like your rig, too.

Might have to try adding a skirt to some

soft plastics one of these days (non-jig).

Explain the rig. what is the  small piece of plastic for ?

Never mind,   I get it .I remember you use a spring keeper on the bend  and  the plastic blocks  the skirt from sliding on the hook .

Ice coffee w/creamer must be an aquired taste. :wink7:

I think a couple 3lbers in cold, muddy water is impressive!

Way to go!
