Hello everyone. My Shimano Stradic 4000 is very smooth until I put a load on it. I took it apart,  cleaned and lubed it according to Shimanos directions using Shimano lubricant. I also replaced the anti reverse bearing. I'm using 8# mono line. Any ideas on how to smooth this thing out? Thanks.

Was it fairly smooth prior to you disassembling it? Chances are something may have not been put back correctly, a certain part didn't receive the right type of grease, or perhaps a part is worn or missing and needs to be replaced.

I would take the reel apart again and clean and lube the moving parts. Upon reassembly I would look at the schematic to verify everything is present and accounted for and appears to be in working order.

You could always send it to Mike at DVT for him to look at. He could probably diagnosis the problem upon doing a cleaning and parts inspection. After doing so he could give you a better idea of what may have been the problem and the cost of any small parts needed for the repair.

I bought the reel on ebay . the anti reverse bearing was bad. The cage that holds the needle bearings together was broken. I don't know how the previous owner could have broken it. So I don't know the past history on the reel. Maybe the other bearings are bad also. I know I reassembled it correctly. You mentioned Mike at DVT. How do I get hold of him? Thanks.

is there any slop in the gear/handle? if so you might need to shim it to make it feel smooth.

i'd flush all the bearings to see if that improves it.

a worn out worm gear/pawl could also cause it to act up.

What do you plan to use a 4000 series spinning reel for?

Does the reel have any salt water corrosion sites?

I use it for bass fishing and trout fishing. No sine of salt water corrosion. I talked to mike at DVT (nice guy) and he says he will look at it for me. Seems pretty reasonable.

I live pretty close to Shimano in California so I could send it or take it there. They get pretty backed up sometimes.

True but I've had good luck with quick turnaround. And in the event parts need updating, they're a pretty sure bet.

Which Stradic model is it? As Shimano models approach 5 years of no longer being sold, I try to send them to the factory. Reason is a Shimano parts seem to sometimes get rare so I try to get them freshened up at the source before the parts become impossible to fund.

In hindsight buying a used reel with a known problem is something that I always avoid.  I'm from the school of buying used equipment may be buying some one else's problem, which appears to be the case.

I would send the reel directly to Shimano, it's true parts are not always available for sales but the service department is a separate entity and should be able to make he reel right.

Thanks for your help guys. The one bearing I didn't really check out was the line bearing on the bail. I'll check that out and if it's OK I'll send it to Shimano

Do an internet search and you will discover this is not an isolated problem with the line roller bearing on stradics.  1 person I read had 5 stradics with the same problem.  I've replaced that bearing several times on both my stradics.  Last time around Shimano didn't have the bearing available so I went into Boca bearings with bearing in hand.  They told me that people come in all the time just for that problem, these reels are used in saltwater.  Hard for me to understand why when the placement of the bearing does not come in contact with water, and my spheros' using the same bearing never has had that problem.

This bearing has nothing to do with the overall smoothness of the reel, the bearing being bad really just creates some noise and the roller just not moving as free, the reel is still very functional.  I'd reel all the line back onto the spool, if the reel is rough when no line is passing over the roller your problem lies elsewhere.

The reel is only rough when line is being spooled up. I took it apart today and cleaned the spool bearing assembly and it seems OK. I'm going to take it out in the next couple of days and see how it does.

I took it out yesterday and it feels much better. Thanks for your help.
