Super User Raider Nation Fisher Posted February 28, 2015 Super User Posted February 28, 2015 Al right yankees. I'm interested in this sport I have been hearing about. Ice racing a motorcycle sounds like a blast to me. Anything in particular I need to know before I decide whether or not to head up that way? Will a Hayabusa be acceptable? Or is there a special bike made for this kind of thing? I know about the spiked tires and safety gear. I'm curious about this. 200 mph on concrete is an absolute rush. Is this compareable? Quote
BaitMonkey1984 Posted February 28, 2015 Posted February 28, 2015 Took my first car (2001 mustang) out on the ice 10 + years ago. Ice was 20+ inches that year. Spent the whole day out there racing a full size truck. Have taken my jeep out on since, but nothing has come close to the fun of racing the mustang or just having fun doing donuts. P.S. don't expect the females to approve. 1 Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted February 28, 2015 Super User Posted February 28, 2015 They race on my favorite lake haven't in a few years but considering the last report I heard 2 weeks ago the ice was 20+" they have been out a lot this year Quote
tipptruck1 Posted February 28, 2015 Posted February 28, 2015 leave it to a southerner. To want to race a street bike on ice. As a guy that has been in ice many time. Natural ice is not smooth as you think. In other words I would not do it. If you want to race on ice. I suggest a atv, a dirt bike, or a older car. Quote

tipptruck1 Posted March 1, 2015 Posted March 1, 2015 Take a look at this video. Take notice of a few things. One how slow the bike is going around the turns. Vs the 2wd Porsche. Also notice how munch the Porsche is bouncing around. No way would you want to go 200mph on that. If I was you and you wanted to go ice racing. Four wheels are more fun then two. Also you might want to move to a place that sees ice. That don't melt the next day. Quote

Ain't enough gold in China to get me to move north of the Mason Dixon line. I have no issues traveling to play in the snow and ice. However, your advice of 4 wheels being more fun than 2 has been noted. Perhaps I should bring a quad to bounce around on the ice. Quote
Catch 22 Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 If you race ice bikes competitively I suggest you practice crawling as fast as possible. If you go down in the front of the pack it may come in handy. I watched snow machine drag racing on a lake yrs ago. I was amazed at the speed. Quote

One guy set a e.t. world record for ice drags a few years ago. Quote
Super User Sam Posted March 3, 2015 Super User Posted March 3, 2015 Rules for ice racing. 1. Only on thin ice. No ice over 1/4 inch thick. 2. No helmets. 3. Gaseous foods not allowed within two days of event. 4. Winner gets free ride to hospital in ambulance. 5. Best to do this activity in Florida. 6. If thrown from bike try not to let bikes behind you hit you as you lay on or in the ice. 7. Only speeds of 60+ MPH will count towards points. 8. First rider to get to 100 points without going to the hospital or sinking in the water wins. Now is this a great sport, or what?????? Quote
