Looking for some thoughts on a drop shot spinning reel for dedicated set-up. Plan to pair with DVT (MHX DS 821 6'10" 1/8-3/8 Mag Lite /XF). Will use yo zuri 6 lb. and would like to stay under $150. Snowing like crazy here.....have to think pleasant thoughts....Thanks, as always for the knowledge.

A Shimano Sahara would be hard to beat in yourprice range. They are solid reels, and only run 80-90 bucks. If you want to spend a little more, the Saros is great as well.

Stradic FJ or Saros can be found new for under $150. Occasionally a used Stradic CI4 or CI4+ will show up for close to that. Either the 1000 or 2500 series would work well. Take into account the weight of the reel and how it may or may not balance with the rod.

I would suggest a Symmtery, about $100, then buy tackle with the rest.

Good luck with your decision.

Find a used Stradic Ci4. I love how light it is and it's refine enough. Just very easy on the arm to when your holding the rod straight out or slightly tip up all day.

Yo-Zuri 8 lb is .011 dia = to Sunline Super Sniper 12 lb. if you like Yo-Zuri line drop down to 6 lb, then it's closer to Sunline 10 lb, or do yourself a favor and use Sunline Sniper or Seaguar Ivicx 6 or 8 lb line, they use honest # test to line Dia ratings. You are finesse fishing with light custom built rod, the line is important.

The drag is very important with finesse drop shot fishing, smooth and must be reliable, any of the Shimano reels in the $100-150 price range will work for you, lighter the weight the better match for your rod. The CI 4 is ideal, about $220 retail.

you can get a Pflueger Supreme MGX for $79 on sale at Cabelas website. just a couple of days ago the were $59 there. normally its a $100 reel. I got one a couple years ago and love it. I'd even say save a pretty chunk of change and get a Pflueger Trion or Abu Garcia Cardinal. Yeah theyre not expensive high end reels, but i have both(in the old models) and they have been great to me. In the 5 years or so ive owned them ive never once even cleaned, oiled, or lubed them. honestly though, any reel will work for a drop shot, one of few applications where i think the rod might be a bit more important. if i were you id grab that Supreme while its on sale...

and if you insist on spending a little more, the Pflueger Supreme XT is also on sale at cabelas website for $119, usually $149

This. I got my Supreme MGX 30 for $60 at Gamder Mountain on Black Friday, and I LOVE it. All of the Pfueger Spinning reels are great. The Trion is a really good real, but in my opinion id go with the President over it. For your price range though, Id definetley recommend one of the Suoreme series.

Thanks, as always, folks.  I have some options.  Bigger question will be size of reel.  2500 (or equivalent) seems to be consensus.  I would like to stay as light as possible with the rod being where it is in weight.  Tennessee handle will help with balance.   Thanks, again, for those who took the time.

I gave my son Phenix rod with Tennesse handle and Shimano Stradic 1000 reel combo when he was 12, he is 32 now. This outfit has caught hundreds of bass over 3 lbs the past 20 years and still in good condition.

Drop or split shot you don't need a 2500 size spinning reel for finesse presentations.

Completely agree, either one size 1000.

honestly, you can use any size reel you want. a common misconception is that the drop shot has to be a light line and light tackle finesse technique. but that couldnt be more false. it can be done effectively with any size tackle. but if you want a light weight reel to pair with that specific rod, the pflueger supreme mgx is very light and comes in several sizes.

You can drop shot a 5 lb rock cod rig, it doesn't make it a finesse presentation.

The term finesse fishing was coined by Don Iovino describing how Dick Trask was winning western bass tournaments back in the 80's. Trask adopted the age old split shot rig and used 4 1/2" Phenom and Flutter Craft curl tail worms with 4 to 6 lb mono and used the same worms with 1/16-1/8 oz dart head jigs for suspended bass. Dick's precision boat control combined with light line presentations became known as finesse fishing amoung tournament anglers.

Aaron Martens credits the late Dick Trask as being his mentor and is a today a top finesse bass angler.

Light line bass fishing isn't new, Jason Lucas was promoting the use of 6 to 10 line back in the early 50's and once caught several 4 to 5 lb smallmouth using sewing thread to prove his point. Most bass anglers use heavier line then needed.

Just picked up this abu reel($100) for my plastics/drop shot. Reel is perfect size and very nice quality, super smooth.

Paired it with a 6'9" medium/light rod, and so far the setup is the bees knees.

That is a company we have had issues with and the website is blocked

Tom : Any issues with excessive coiling of 6lb. - 8lb. InvizX or Sniper FC using a 1000 size spinning reel ?

Line twist from the soft plastic spinning happens, coiling hasn't been an issue.

I use TangleFree line conditioner on Super Sniper FC line, both baitcasting and spinning to help manage the FC line and keep it wet. The smaller dismeter spool size hasn't been a issue with the Stradic reel or the less expensive Sadona series spinning reels. I only use spinning for light weight finesse presentations.

Thanks again for knowledge. Going to BPS today (have gift cards from Christmas) to look at Daiwa Procyon (size 2000).

I say try a Daiwa spinning reel they do not twist line like most spinning reel brands .The real secrete is to stop the line with your finger close the bail by hand and don't crank the handle when the drag is being used.I own 8 daiwa sol's 4 fuego's type a's and 3 tierra's and there are no line twist issues with any of these reels.
