Sanka629 Posted February 25, 2015 Author Posted February 25, 2015 I got one. Looks like they sold quick. Quote
JGBassinAL Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 The Core 50MG7 has not been discontinued. Only the 100MG and 100MG7. That came straight from a Shimano rep a few months ago, unless things have changed since then. Quote

That came straight from a Shimano rep a few months ago, unless things have changed since then. All Core models have been discontinued. Per Shimano rep Yesterday: The Core models are discontinued. We will maintain parts for 5-7 years, but that may increase now. We have been working on some things with Japan to maintain parts for longer periods. Jeff 1 Quote
Super User kickerfish1 Posted February 26, 2015 Super User Posted February 26, 2015 Probably going to snag one soon again. Great reels especially if they are discounted prices. Wonder what this holds for the Chronarch 50e and Scorpion 1000xt? Shortly behind the Core 50mg7? Quote

Must have just happened recently as I tried to buy a 100MG7 from the Shimano rep I know a few months ago but he couldn't get it but he was able to get me a 50MG7. I wonder why they decided to discontinue it as well... Quote

Super User RoLo Posted February 27, 2015 Super User Posted February 27, 2015 The Shimano Core is the smoothest, quietest and most reliable casting reel I have ever owned in fresh or saltwater. That's a broad-reaching statement that embraces unseemly reels like the Penn GTI and Penn Internationals. Why would Shimano discontinue a superb, top-selling freshwater reel? That's easy, the CEO's decided that Shimano would ultimately benefit financially. One theory is that the ripple-effect from JDM reels is shaking out the domestic market.I have trouble with that theory though, because the differences between JDM & domestic reels are essentially cosmetic; stuff like label placement, handle knob changeout, colors and finishes. Shimano is a shrewd corporation that wants a strong market in Japan as well as the USA.Consequently, you'd be hard pressed to find any measurable difference in "performance" between JDM and domestic reels. Raising the price of the Stella from 600 to $700 went over like a lead balloon, so maybe this time around Shimano decided to change the name before ultimately raising the price Roger Quote
fisherrw Posted February 27, 2015 Posted February 27, 2015 Is the 50 ok for deep cranks? Kind of a dumb question I guess. Quote

The new Chronarch Ci4 is very close though in smoothness. Reliability wise, only time will tell. I have little doubt reliability will be acceptable, but some of the hardware etc. has been cheapened. I'm afraid you're right, as cheaper components is a popular road to higher profit margins (e.g. Johnny Morris rods). Roger Quote
