Green Trout Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 Well, the winter is almost over and temps will start increasing through the next month. My question is, what bait should I throw in this pre- spawn time. I love fishing up shallow but can't use open hooks because of the insane amount of snags I'm fishing around. My water temp will be in the 55-60 degree range depending on the day. Water clarity is stained with only about a foot of visibility. What baits would be best for me fidhing throughout the month of March? Thanks Quote

Do you know the travel routes the big ladies take to the spawning grounds? Do you understand that any water temperature changes can affect a bass' behavior and destroy a great day on the water? If I expand Catt's list I would add a Carolina Rig and a Shaky Head just in case they are holding to deep structure or drop offs. And I would add a Brush Hog into the mix. Don't forget your jig trailer and rattles. Fish slow depending on the water temperature so you can aggravate them into hitting your bait. Good luck and let us know how you do. 2 Quote

gobig Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 There are so many different options it's almost endless. The key is selecting the right baits to come through the snags. When you say snags what do you mean? Rocks? Weeds? Timber? You get the point. The reason I ask is because different baits have different capabilities. You need to break down the water column top, middle and bottom. Usually the top is not as much of an issue unless your fishing grass mats. I know when I first started bass fishing I strayed away from areas where I would snag up. Now I don't think twice. It's all about proper tool selection. Quote

Typically I have a go to selection consisting of: A drop shot Flickshake Finsee jig or hair jig Spinnerbait or chatterbait Lipless crank Jerkbait Rarely do I catch fish on other presentations but occasionally a weightless soft bait or texas rigged plastic has worked before. Top 3 would be a jerkbait,dropshot and hair jig. Quote
