Done a lot of research and just want to get some fresh opinions. My local tackle shop has a sale on duckett micro magic rods, $119. They also have a few of the discontinued powell endurance rods, but for the old price of $180.

I'm looking to add a rod to my line up that I could flip jigs or T rig. I'm looking at a 7'2 or 7'3. I obviously want sensitivity but need a decent backbone also.

Any thoughts, opinions, or even other options are welcome.

Powell Endurance is a much better rod imo. From build quality and component quality to sensitivity. The only thing the Duckett has on the Endurance is that it is lighter, but I feel the Endurance balances better, and balance is more important.

You can get the Micro Magic for $100 from Shelton's Clothing & Outdoors.  I started a thread asking about these rods.  I got the impression that quality control was often lacking.  Since you are able to physically see the rod, you obviously can pick out a good rod.  I have only one Powell, and no Duckett rods so I can't comment on which is better.  I like my Powell quite a lot, but I bought used and didn't anywhere near that price.

In your place I would be awfully tempted to go with the Duckett because I could pick out a well built rod, and because I have read that their customer service is excellent.  However, if you have the cash the Powell is almost guaranteed to be trouble free.  I found that I can cast more accurately with my Powell 7'2" MH-XF than with my older black 7'2" MHF Cumara.

I used a Duckett 7'11" crank bait rod on Kentucky lake and it lacks just about everything including durability. Aka, the white carrot stick...

Owned a 5 power Powell as well, it's light years ahead of a Duckett. Before I chose a another Duckett I would make a rod out of Osage orange.

Go Powell outta these two choices...easily..

X Infinity on the white carrot stick

I never make a trip without my Endurance rods...my Duckets are retired and will be sold or given to friends who like them.

I have 2 Endurance 723's and they will not go anywhere. I'm really kicking myself in the butt for not grabbing another when TW had them for $118. Just to have incase something would ever happen to the ones I have now. Though @ $180 I'm not sure I'd pay that price for one. Check with thefishranger and see if maybe they still have some leftover. Cody is a good guy to do business with. There are a lot of good choices in the $100-180 range. Too many honestly. Check out the Tatula rods. It's a lot of rod for $100

X2

My Endruance 723 is responsible for 75% of my bass caught in the past 4 years.  Plus, with the backbone of the rod, my hook up to landing rate has gone way up.

Disclaimer:  I have never fished with any Duckett rod before.  I know they are popular and lighter, but I love my Endurance 723 enough not to look at any other manufacturers.

I have never fished a Powell... But I have several ducketts and love them all... I fish also g loomis rods ... My tournament partner is both a shimano and g loomis rep and I only use the benefits for the shimano products.. I'm not sure if you guys are bashing or getting bad Duckett rods but my crankbait rods from duckett work great for me... And the new micro magic pro rods are better than the micros of old ... But what I think many don't realize is the price point of 120.. A 200 dollar rod in that of a Powell shouldn't have the trouble it does to dissuade people in a comparison with a micro magic .. Seems to me it's fight should be with a white ice .. And not many people diss white ice duckett rods

no one really dissed the Micro magic, just thought the Endurance was better, that being said I have a Powell Max 3D, haven't caught a fish on it yet but it's very sensitive, got to take it out a yesterday when it finally hit 30 degrees in a harbor.

You can actually get a Duckett Ghost, Macro Magic, and Micro Magic all for $100 at Shelton's Clothing & Outdoors.  They have several Powell Infernos going for $130.  I'm not too familiar with the Inferno though.  Thoughts on that rod?

Shelton's is sold out of the Micro Magic's but they still have some Macro Magic rods left.  I have and fish both Powell and Duckett Rods and I can tell you 100% that Duckett Rods are NOT Carrot Sticks. Some people just like to bash and I can understand that because I still feel ripped off from Dobyn's DX which is in no way shape or form worth the price they ask for it. Any way, the Powell Endurance is one fine rod and you really can't go wrong with either. The Endo is going to be a little better than the Micro Magic but it is not a great deal. At the prices you listed I feel the Micro would be the way to go, they are very nice rods, lighter than the Powell Endo but not quite as sensitive but not lacking by much, you would be very happy with the micro magic too. I am surprised by some of the comment on the Duckett rods because they are fantastic sticks but that is just the way the internet goes. If you need any questions answered PM me and I'll see if I can help.

EDIT....The new Micro Magic Pro won best fresh water bass rod at Icast and the blanks are the same as the older Micro Magic rods. For $119.00 they are well worth it.

I would at least get the Max 3D, it comes with Fuji Alconites. The Infernos come with stainless steel I believe.

You are correct and those guides do not do very well with braided line. Also the Powell Inferno line is $129.99 Base price so no sale at that price.

I'm also kinda surprised at the opinions of the Micro Magics here.  Until this thread, I had heard nothing but decent reviews on them.  I just picked up a White Ice at a great price in the flea market and was planning on picking up a couple Micro Magics to round out my arsenal.  I'll admit that the comments here have me second guessing the Micro Magics that I wanted to get.

I don't think anyone is saying that they're bad rods at all. Just that the endurance is a better choice of those two. I've fished a micro magic spinning rod and a white ice casting rod. No complaints with either.

Do not second guess yourself on them, they are fantastic rod's and some of the best you can buy. They carry a 20 year warranty and are very light and sensitive. you're always going to have some people bad mouthing some brand, if it wasn't duckett it would be one of the other brands. I would be willing to bet you money most that bad mouth have not even fished that brand and just decided they didn't like them because of something they read on the internet that wasn't true even when they read it. Duckett rods are the real deal and one of the best you can buy.

The people saying that ducketts are carrot sticks are the funniest I have read and that is the exact same thing as saying dobyn's are Powell rod's.

I can't comment on the Duckett rods, but I have really enjoyed every Powell rod I've ever used.

I will agree with you that a lot of people go off of what they read rather than personal experience when commenting on posts like these, but I do not. We have got into this before so I'm not going to again. I just want to say that I think the White Ice and Micro Magics are good rods, but where I have a problem is quality control. I had a Micro Magic come straight from Duckett with the first guide on the side of the blank (I have a picture I will upload if anyone wants, I posted it on a thread a while back), and I had a White Ice snap right above the reel seat on a cast. I have also had the tips snap off of a couple other Micro Magics on hooksets. Like I said I think they are good rods and fish well, but there is no way some of their rods should make it out of the factory. If you do have one break or have a problem with one, Duckett's customer service is top notch tho.

Thanks JGBassinAL, I agree some rods have defects, I've seen many different rods,"not Ducketts but I'm sure they have some just like others do" that have problems that shouldn't have made it through QC. I own and fish a lot of different rods and they are all great, I've said in this thread that I think the Powell Endo is a little better than the Micro Magic but it isn't by a large amount. I am a big Duckett fan but I always tell what I believe to be right and try to help others, just as they have helped me. I've asked quite a few members here for advice on things and I'm always happy to get that advice. I own 13 White Ice, 7 Micro Magic, 2 Macro Magic, 5 Ghost, 1 Micro Magic Pro and 1 Terex. Out of those rods I have broken the 7'3 Heavy White Ice twice in all the years I've fished Duckett rods, both times was on hook sets on frog fish with 65# braided line and both times Duckett had the rod replaced with in four days turn around. I also had two Ghost rods replaced after the warranty was out because they had turned yellow and duckett did not want me fishing with the ugly rods. Duckett has been very good to me and I have been VERY happy with their product. I have a few rods that are better (They cost much more too) but I really have none that once everything is factored in that I like more. It all comes down to what we as the fisherman like and if you have a rod and reel you are happy with then that is the best one for you. Thanks for listening to my ramblings and good fishing.

Thanks for all the replies fellas. Really wasn't tryin to get into a "which is better" but I did gain some good info so I appreciate it. My main question was of the endurance was so much better as to pay the extra money for it, especially knowing they aren't made anymore.

But I'm pretty sure I've made my mind up that I'm going to go with another Hammer rod. Wanted to try something new, and I still may, but tempted to just go with the tired and true method.
