TheSmilingSwordsman Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 I'm in the market for a new spinning rod. Right now I use a tow piece rod that came in a combo with my Mitchell reel about 4 years ago. I am looking for something that I can use to with a Senko, a drop shot, a fluke and an occasional crank bait. I already own a Baitcasting MH/F setup. I am thinking something along the lines of M/F rod. Does this seem reasonable? Would I be better served with a M/M rod? I was thinking of getting something in the $100 to $130 range like a St. Croix Mojo Bass, Falcon Original or a Duckett Ghost. Any leads or advice would be greatly appreciated. Quote
OntarioFishingGuy Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 You are right on with a M/F rod. At that price range, I would take a look at a Fenwick HMG. Great rods at a great price. 1 Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted February 24, 2015 Super User Posted February 24, 2015 Just about any medium power spinning rod that is fast, or even extra fast will be soft enough for crankbaits. I have a 6'9" M-XF Fenwick Elite Tech Smallmouth rod and I use to throw a #5 shad rap with it and it worked well for that, I don't think you need a moderate spinning rod unless it is in the medium heavy power range. 1 Quote
HookdUP Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 Youcan get a micro Magic Duckett for 110 and I think you'd love it .. I have both mh and h and love both ... Quote
Super User FishTank Posted February 24, 2015 Super User Posted February 24, 2015 How about the Fenwick Elite Tech Bass rods. This would be my rod of choice in that price range (seen them on sale) ETB610ML-XFS. 1 Quote
TheSmilingSwordsman Posted February 25, 2015 Author Posted February 25, 2015 Ok. I'll add Fenwick and 13 to my watch list and I'll just keep my eyes open for a good sale. Thanks for the help. Quote
wytstang Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 Shimano Crucial Spinning Rod 6'10" Medium CRSJ610MA selling right now on TW for $83 shipped. Quote
The Fisher Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 Wait until TW has a 15% off sale and look at a St Croix Premier med fast. It will run about $110.50 Quote
Joedodge Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 Look at the berkley lightning rod shock, and halo rods excellent rods in the $39-79 range. Quote
JaxBasser Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 I just purchased a 7'2 MF Phenix Maxim and it's a really nice rod for $110. I also looked at the Fenwick HMG, *** Black, and the Duckett. The HMG would have been my second choice, all were nice rods though and it's hard to go wrong at that price point. Also the 6' 10" MF Crucial on tackle warehouse for around 80 bucks is nice rod at that price. Quote
Super User WRB Posted February 25, 2015 Super User Posted February 25, 2015 Shimano Crucial Spinning Rod 6'10" Medium CRSJ610MA selling right now on TW for $83 shipped. This is a good deal, better hurry!I was going to recommend Lamiglas Excel 2, however they are sold out at $79. Tom Quote
grayAG Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 I have a 6'9" MH Duckett Ghost that I love for shaky heads, Senkos, grubs, and light T rigs. Paired with a Daiwa Aird spinning reel Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted February 25, 2015 Super User Posted February 25, 2015 If you go with the St. Croix you might even consider the ML/XF depending on what you throw the most. Look at the recommended weights on both and figure out what suits the technique you'll be throwing the most. Quote
Super User Oregon Native Posted February 26, 2015 Super User Posted February 26, 2015 $99 dollar Duckett with larger eyes and a Daiwa 1300SS tournament reel...about $105...great combo. Quote
TheSmilingSwordsman Posted February 26, 2015 Author Posted February 26, 2015 I am getting a lot of good recommendations. Are there any rods in this price point you would avoid? Quote
Super User WRB Posted February 26, 2015 Super User Posted February 26, 2015 You can't go wrong with established rod makers with a good track record of customer service. Duckett for a example started with Carrot sticks, not a good choice, he now has his white line of rods and it may be too soon to know how long these will last under UV exposure for example, however very popular rods. Shinamo, Fenwick, St Croix, Lamiglas are all good well established rod companies with good quality mid price range rods. Tom Quote
