Nothing holds up to my 30 year old DAM Quckie. Had a worm drive gearing system. Way cool. Weighed about 7.5 lbs.

I serviced a couple of those for a customer. Took me half a day to get the 40yr old dried up grease out of them. Still having nightmares. lol they are absolute tanks in every sense of the word.

Spinning reels haven't had bail springs since the mid 80s.

HUH ?

I've replaced a few, last one was on my Penn conquer which is not an old reel.  FYI http://store.scottsbt.com/32-5000CQ-Spring-Bail-Spring-P25686.aspx

Quantum cabo abd boca, have a magnetic trip.

That spring serves to hold a trip lever in place. It's the lever, and the bail connection itself that flip the bail back into position, not the spring, like "bail springs" of old. Out of the hundreds of spinning reels I serviced, the only springs like that I replaced were from when someone unqualified took the reel apart. In the beginning, that guy was me, lol. Anyway, that spring doesn't ever need changing, and I'd changing it fixed the reel, chances are cleaning out the rest of the mechanism is what fixed it. Now saltwater, well that can corrode a spring - maybe that's your issue with the Penn.

I have both (baitcaster and spinning) and think that they are both great products, never had an issue with either reel and find the smoke spinning to be smooth and a pleasure to use.
