Violinguy Posted February 23, 2015 Posted February 23, 2015 So it's not news to anyone (it better not be) that the weather in the south (along with just about everywhere else) has been pretty cold and wintery the last couple of weeks. We had ice on our porch here in Atlanta yesterday. The temp. is finally over 50 today, but it's been really cold for a while. This is really gonna screw up pre-spawn fishing this year right? Anyone have any thoughts on spring fishing in the South? Especially Georgia/Tennessee/Alabama? Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted February 23, 2015 Super User Posted February 23, 2015 It's just a blast of winter. Everything will be back to normal in a couple of weeks. Quote
Violinguy Posted February 23, 2015 Author Posted February 23, 2015 Well I hope so. Of course, we are under a winter weather advisory for tomorrow with potentially 1-2" of snow and ice. I just don't remember temps under 20 this late ever (it was 14 @#$%! degrees two nights ago). Usually this stuff happens in January, then by the end of February, the temps are in the 60s and I'm respooling all my reels. Quote
scyounggun Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 Calling for snow here tomorrow in SC. Got a lot of ice in the upstate at home last week, but nothing but rain down here in Columbia at school. Quote
Crappiebasser Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 Even though we've had some cold weather the water temp is actually warmer today than it was this time last year here. I went out yesterday and saw 43-46 degrees. IMO the cold doesn't hurt the prespawn as bad as a mild winter with a mid March cold snap. Quote
Jsnider88 Posted February 27, 2015 Posted February 27, 2015 I'm from Birmingham, Alabama. And the last time I went fishing I didn't get one single bite. It was in the high 40's to low 50's with a pretty chopping wind. I threw jigs, cranks of all kind, including lipless, and jerkbaits, Texas rigged creature baits and worms, craws, spinnerbaits, and still nothing. When it got done snowing here last night I went outside and heard some frogs croaking out close to the creek behind my house. Does that mean they'd be hitting frogs yet, or is it still to early? scyounggun Posted February 27, 2015 Posted February 27, 2015 This weather has just about shut lake murray down. 2-3 weeks ago the fish had started coming up and 20-25 pounds was winning tournaments and now if you have 15 you will probably win. All the winning bags are coming from 30-35 ft where they were coming from 10 or less a couple weeks ago. Quote
HookdUP Posted February 27, 2015 Posted February 27, 2015 In south east va it's been extremely cold with temps in teens and twenties with some 30s and rare 40s mixed in and being as this is my first full season up here im not sure what's going to happen ... Haven't caught a fish since mid January but haven't been able to fish but have heard fish are being caught none the less Quote
Jsnider88 Posted February 27, 2015 Posted February 27, 2015 I was talking to one of my buddies today and he said that one of the guys he fishes with has been on warrior river catching them at 40 feet. He showed me a picture of a 5 that he pulled out from down there. And here in Bama, the fish don't get that deep very othen. I've personally never seen them deeper than 32 feet. And he was fishing a crankbait to get those fish from 40 feet Quote
GodfatherOfSeoul Posted March 1, 2015 Posted March 1, 2015 Where do you like to fish in Atlanta? Quote
Violinguy Posted March 25, 2015 Author Posted March 25, 2015 Where do you like to fish in Atlanta? Mostly small ponds due west of the city. I live in Douglasville and there are dozens of small ponds within 20 minutes of me. If I want to catch fish, I go to Boundary Waters Park and fish the small pond behind the swimming pool. If I want to maybe catch large fish, I go to Dog River Rec. Area (it costs money if you live outside Douglas County) or one of the bigger lakes around. I don't own a boat so regular trips to the big lakes like Lanier or Alatoona aren't in the cards. I take the kids to any one of the 4 or 5 park ponds nearby like Deer Lick Park or Hunter Park. Lots of panfish and an occaisional cat. Quote
RanndomUndead Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 Finally got up to 49 degree water here in central VA...So close to 50's, yet so far away Quote
GodfatherOfSeoul Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 Ever had any luck going to sweetwater? That should be near you too. You can rent jon boats too but paddling is a hassle to get all over that lake Quote
