BasshunterJGH Posted February 22, 2015 Posted February 22, 2015 How do you attach your braid to your reels? Do you prefer to tie directly to the spool, use tape, or mono backing? Quote
Joedodge Posted February 22, 2015 Posted February 22, 2015 All three. But I prefer backing so I don't have a ton of braid filling a spool for no reason. Quote
Super User rippin-lips Posted February 22, 2015 Super User Posted February 22, 2015 All 3 For shallow spools that only hold 70 yards I use 1.5 wraps of electrical tape and then tie direct. For spools that hold a normal amount I use cheap mono backing and then tie to the braid. Quote
Penguino Posted February 22, 2015 Posted February 22, 2015 Mono backing. It helps save you braid. Quote

Super User roadwarrior Posted February 22, 2015 Super User Posted February 22, 2015 About half, I never want to feel the knot. Quote
Super User rippin-lips Posted February 22, 2015 Super User Posted February 22, 2015 I get 3 fill ups from a 200 yard spool of fluoro. 2 fill ups from a 150 yard spool of power pro. Sometimes 3 depending on what combo it is. I don't need more than 50 yards on a combo I use for throwing light plastics so I get 3. In short just do 50/50 and you'll be fine. 1 Quote
Super User BassinLou Posted February 22, 2015 Super User Posted February 22, 2015 I use mono backing with an alberto knot. When I start seeing or feeling the union knot its time to re-spool. This will take a loooong time though. LOL. Quote
Buzbait88 Posted February 23, 2015 Posted February 23, 2015 mono backing, use a uni-uni knot to attach it. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted February 23, 2015 Super User Posted February 23, 2015 Straight braid or backing is a personal choice. I go straight braid putting about 1" long strip of painters tape for grip. Quote
corn-on-the-rob Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 I use only a small amount of cranks of mono to prevent slipping but I want the most possible braid on the reel. Braid will last you more than one season as long as there is enough left on the spool after a season of retying and break offs. Quote
bigturtle Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 Straight braid with tape. Want the spool to be as light as possible to cast lighter baits. Quote
Josh Smith Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 Most of my reels hold 200+ yards of line, so I use backing. That means tying the backing to the spool and using a uni to uni knot or an Albright knot. Josh Quote
*Hank Posted March 1, 2015 Posted March 1, 2015 Can't you tie direct to a spool with holes? Most spools have them I think. Quote
