Backlash123 Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 I'm in the process of upgrading my trolling motor, and would like some advice. I have a 2014 Nitro Z6, I've already upgraded the electronics, and added a PowerPole, so the remaining upgrade is the TM. I'm thinking of getting a 80lb 24v Maxxum. The reason I'm thinking of the 24v is because I want to save on weight, what I'm wondering if the 80lb TM will be enough for the areas I fish, mostly Everglades canal system and Ockeechobee. Will the 80lb be enough, or should I go up to the 112lb 36v. I would prefer to stay at the 80lb, but want to do the right thing. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Quote
Under the Radar Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 Backlash, it looks like you're already moving up from a 12v to a at least a 24v. I went from a 12v 45# to a 24v 80# and have never looked back.I'm running a 176XT Stratos. the 24 v has never let me down, even fishing all day in 15-20 mph wind. The old TM wouldn't last til noon in those conditions. i think your concern about the extra weight is valid, also what about space AND the new battery charger you're going to need. Quote

Super User Jig Man Posted February 22, 2015 Super User Posted February 22, 2015 I run a MG TE82 on a 206 Champion. Rarely do I need any more than that and I fish on windy days. If you want it to stay down fishing into the wind, add some length to the shaft. My boat came with a 67# MG with a 42" shaft. I took it off the boat and put the 82 with a 45" shaft. On windy days the 45 will come out of the water as swells pass under the boat. Quote

You could go with the 112, but I'm guessing you're fairly confined on how much room you have for batteries and the extra weight in that boat would probably be a bigger con than the pro of more power. bassin4me2 Posted February 23, 2015 Posted February 23, 2015 I have a Stratos, 22SS Extreme. It's 22'. Had that tm on there from day one of the boat. This is a VERY HEAVY boat. I get 2.5mph (gps).. My foot will not allow me to roll it, to turn on tm, so, I keep it on ALL day long. I ALWAYS have power at end of day. Remember that one can not put it on HIGH and run all day.. Great motor..........
