Not overwhelmed anymore, but man do I love Cabela's!! :respect-059:    So much more there than just fishing stuff that makes it a fun trip every time!!

Most of what I wear on a daily basis (except underwear) has their name on it.   Love their options in rain gear and footwear.  It's ALL there under one roof, sportsman's paradise for me!  I buy most of my fishing tackle from Capra's but Cabela's gets the nod on everything else.

I admit I like to go look around in the big BPS, Dick's, Gander and such, but I really enjoy going into the old mom & pop tackle shops. You know the ones that are kind of old, run down, dusty and sell live bait. They have cool stuff, some which has not been made in years. Colors of lures no longer produced. I feel good buying from these folks. They love to talk fishing and give out the best current tips on when and where to go. Unfortunately, we have lost most of these shops in the last couple of years. They can't compete with the big stores and the internet. I miss these places, even the musty smell was a welcome to me.

There is a classic bait and tackle shop just like you describe in North Webster, Indiana: "Ye Olde Tackle Box." Bass, Muskie and panfish are popular in the area and they have everything you could ever need. http://www.yeoldetacklebox.com/index.html.

Used to have an awesome shop in a hardware store till new management came in and marked everything up by 2 bucks. I have a Cabelas Distribution center about 2 hours away I make it to once a year and a full store being built about 35 minutes away, kind of excited for this.

That said I have a Dick's ten minutes from work I will hit every so often, but mostly I order through TW because for the most part I save a ton of money. I do like Cabela's fishing poles because they go on sale often, so it will be nice having them close by.

Only time I was overwhelmed was the first time I hit BPS Gurnee, after that I knew what to expect. Having a big selection was very nice.

My biggest pet peave with Cabelas is being asked by every person working there if I'm interested in a Cabelas card.

well....ARE you??

Hmm....they don't do that at my local store.  Just when you come in the door and not always at that.  Once you get past the greeters you never hear mention of it.

My Cabelas in Post Falls Idaho is anything but impressive. The fishing department is weak. The only rods they carry are house brand, a handful of Loomis, and a few Croix. 70 percent Cabelas. The staff has no clue what's what or what they're selling.

Used to be that way for me to at first. At this point , I know what works for me so I just replace stuff that breaks, wears out or gets used up. At 68, I don't like milling around in stores as much as I used to. I do most of my shopping on line now and it's great

X2. I'm 65, love shopping on line. Fast and easy.

I love Cabela's. I practically live in the Bargain Cave. I wear their dress shirts and pants to work Monday through Friday. I wear their casual stuff and fishing gear. I hunt in their gear. I will be fishing their rods once my order arrives. I like their hard baits. I find them to be a bargain because their stuff holds up in my experience.

I refuse to do business with BPS. Every time I buy something, there's a problem and it's a hassle and the product doesn't hold up. And, politically, I don't like that they use Bank of America for their credit.

The only thing that overwhelms me at Cabela's is the fear of not having enough money to buy everything I want. I feel lucky in that the Rodger, MN store has a HUGE fishing section and the staff there all fish quite a bit and give great advise and help. One of the workers there even guides in the summer. Plus my kids like going because of the fish tanks.

I even like the Cabela's card. I get free stuff every year by racking up the "points" on all purchases. You can churn it and build up points pretty quickly.

This weekend I had a few hours to kill out of town, near a BPS while my wife was in some meetings.  A couple/few years ago, that would have meant real trouble.  Saturday, i killed about 90 minutes in there and walked out without buying anything.  Watching the fish in the tank was the best part of the trip.  It is a combination of having way too much stuff already; and over a year here on BR learning, and being able to whittle down my wish list.
