Hey I was wondering if there are any fellow michiganders out there! I'm just getting back into bass fishing. Do any of you guys know when the michigan prespawn and spawn typically occur. I always read about that stuff starting in February or march because they are all from the south. I'd also like to know what your favorite lakes are! Thanks!

It depends a lot on the weather. Southeast Lower Michigan is usually a May spawn. Northern Lower Michigan can be weird; I caught some Largemouth outside of Gaylord last year that still had eggs in June. Experiences will vary depending on lake and location.

For Smallmouth, you can't beat Grand Traverse Bay.

Lakes in the Traverse City area for me. Skegemog, GT Bay, Lake Leelanau, Duck Lake, Green Lake. And I'm sure the spawn will take place from middle May through June, just like last year. I'm just happy that we'll be able to get in an extra month or so once the Natural Resources Committee announces the year-round catch and release season next month. On a side note, you posted in "Northeast" forum. I haven't figured out yet whether Michigan belongs in that or "central".

Lake St. Clair-May to June for SM.  Though, last year everything was late including the Salmon up in Baldwin on Pere Marquette.

Surely, depends on the winter and then the spring weather.

Expanding on that side note, it is always fun to post this kind of question in the "general" section and then watch to see where the Mods move it to.  Most end up in the NE, but at least somebody throws them in the Central.

I guess we're located in a gray area. Maybe we need to have our own "Great Lakes area" region?

In all seriousness, what's everyone's plan from ice out until bass season opens? I've decided just to target crappie in the meantime. I've also been entertaining the idea of traveling down to Ohio for some bassin.

I've always thought this was called the Mid-West.  :Idontknow:

Anyhow, who said the ice was out?  Looking for one more trip, perhaps to Higgins Lake on Sunday for some last ice perch.  After the ice is gone, there are always steelhead swimming in the rivers.

I'm kind of thinking ice out and bass season are going to pretty much happen at the same time. First week of April or so. I drive past Grand Traverse Bay every day for work, and there's still plenty of ice out there.

I'm in SE Michigan, and there's already some nice open water. I was casting last weekend.

I cast in my backyard, with a sexy frog tied on with a broken hook. They get an awful lot of attention from hawks and eagles. So at least my presentation is good for something...

I'm up in Otsego County ~

Plenty of Back Forty casting for me too.

I'm in upper mid lower MI, hows that? Ice everywhere around here. Going through all my tackle for the 100th time. New fishing catalogs seem to come in the mail every other day. Woe is me!

I may have been there, but won't know for sure until you post a picture of you pointing out that location on the palm of your hand.  :laugh5:
