Hi Guys

I wanted to pick your brains, when it comes to a Swim Jig, Football Jig and Stand Up Jig, what do you look for in color, size, shape of the head, features and which of the above for different clarity of water and seasons etc when you go to your local tackle shop to buy some jigs? Please post pics also if you want of your favorite jigs. I am doing a survey for our Fishing Club on what other countries prefer and use during different seasons and conditions.

Swim Jigs: I like 1/4-3/8oz, although I fish a 1/4oz about 85% of the time. I like a bullet shaped head, 7-10 strand weedguard, regular wire hook (not heavy), hand tied skirt with the inner skirt trimmed out. All of these are very important for profile, action, and ease of hooksets. Swim jigs are NOT flipping jigs, but more like a spinnerbait. Colors in the northeast are usually bluegill patterns. My favorite is watermelon and electic purple. Single tail grubs are my favorite trailer. I will use a black and blue in dirty water, or even a bright white shad pattern. Matching grub trailers.

Football head: 3/8oz for shallower water, up to 1oz for 20+ ft. Double tail grubs, or rage craws/Chigger craws. Regular wire hook for easy hooksets with a lot of line out. Always throw craw patterns, because that's what I'm trying to represent.

Stand up heads: I don't use these very often. I like a flat sided head design for easy skipping. My favorite is a D&L Advantage. I like a HEAVY hook, like a tuna gaff. ITs a close-quarters combat bait. 3/8-1/2oz, heavier cover gets a heavier head. In cold water, I'll use a regular chunk for little action, and rage craws/double tail grubs, anything really as the water warms. Most toss craw patterns, sometimes a bluegill pattern if I see a lot of panfish around. Dirty water, I'll toss a color like D&L's Moon Cricket with matching trailer.

Good luck!

Swim jigs.....I run three sizes. 1/4 for ultra shallow work, 3/8 for all around use, and 1/2 for deeper work.

Football....I am of the opinion that a football jig belongs on the bottom, no need for light weights. I use 1/2 ,3/4 or 1 oz only.

Don't use stand up jigs.

Pretty much the same as everybody above.

Swim:  Two colors- bluegill, shad/white.  3/8 for all around, 1/2 for deeper stuff and when its tough and I want the bait to stay down and work slower.

Football:  TightLine Jigs in 1/2 and 3/4.  Like ww2farmer, I think they should stay on the bottom so no need for light weight.  Mostly black and blue, green pumpkin, or Guntersville Special (kind of a mix between the two) Usually use a NetBait Paca Chunk or Strike King Rage Tail, depending on how much action I want.

Don't really use a stand up jig so no real opinion on that.
