Im thinking of a new jig rod for my next build. I usually throw 1/2 oz jigs and would like a rod in the 7' - 7'3" range and would like to stay around $100 or less. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Joe

In the hundred dollar range MHX HM, Rainshadow Immortal are great choices.  I REALLY like my immortal rod, but I have the 72ML and use it for finesse applications.

If you can save up a bit of money or wait for a sale, I would HIGHLY recommend the Rainshadow Eternity2 72M or 72MH.  I built up a 72M and was throwing 3/8oz jigs w/ trailers the other day and the rod is just fantastic.  Absolutely fantastic for bottom contact applications.

I actually have the 72MH blank at home.  There was a recent thread about spiral wrapping so I emailed Rainshadow and they provided me a recipe to spiral wrap the rod.  Just waiting for a couple odds and ends to arrive before I build it.

What do you like about the Eternity over MHX-HM?

Fair disclaimer, I have yet to build on the Gen 2 hi mods.  I like the direction they are headed though, reduced diameter, lighter weight etc.  That seems to be the direction most rods are headed.

Honestly I just feel like it does everything better.  It communicates to me whats on the bottom better, its easier to distinguish transitions from hard to soft or vice versa, grass, grass edges, etc.  I never really wonder what my jigs doing on the bottom, I'm always 'connected' if that makes any sense.  Even on those 'mush' bites, I can feel that something is different and react.  The MHX hi mods are nice, and I don't think you'll miss many, if any, fish with them, but after using both I feel like it does everything a little better.  Its kind of like you read all these mythical things about NRX rods and whatnot, it's as if they're a unicorn.  Well this particular blank is my 'unicorn' if you will.

The more I use it the more I really love it.  I'll be buying another 72M so I can have a dedicated T-RIG and Jig rod.  I really feel like it excels from about 3/16 to 3/8 with trailers.

I will say I prefer the raw finished look of the MHX blanks.  The blue Eternity looks great too, its just a preference thing.

Please excuse the tape at the bottom, I have been experimenting with several different 'butt' styles trying to find the one I prefer the most.

Take a look at the RX8 XMB873. 7'3, weighs only 1.64 ounces, and 88 bucks at get bit.

I'm hoping someone finds an RX8+ 822.5 in a back room they'll sell me.  Heard nothing but amazing things about that blank and the RX8/+ in general.

sarcazmo,

About as close as one can get as far as numbers are concerned.

Batson Eternity2 ETES68ML-CB   1.4 oz

ETES72ML-CB    1.5 oz or cut 4" off the butt section to be 6'10 and probably drop the weight down to the 1.4 oz area
