superbass301 Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 Hey guys what would you buy to start out bass fishing at bass pro shops with only 50-60 bucks? Quote
FishWitWiz Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 Read the thread that I'm linking below. You won't be able to buy the rod & reel for $50-$60, but everything else is solid. If I could do it all over again, this is where I would start, I'd start with 2 bags of 5" senkos, 2 packages of 4/0 hooks, and some good line. http://www.bassresource.com/bass-fishing-forums/topic/13845-guaranteed-to-catch-bass/ Quote
Hyrule Bass Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 Hey guys what would you buy to start out bass fishing at bass pro shops with only 50-60 bucks? assuming you have a rod and reel already, i would start off with 2-3 bags of plastics, hooks, sinkers, a lipless crank, a top water, and a spinnerbait or two. 1 Quote
lecisnith Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 The way I got back into it was a $40 medium spinning combo, a couple of spinners and some plastic worms. Gander mountain even gives you free hooks with their plastics... Quote
primetime Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 If you need a rod and reel, I would focus on getting that out of the way first. I have never used the bass pro combos in that range but I am sure they are plenty good, bass pro makes quality stuff for sure. For tackle...BPS brand lures are good, the xps series floating minnow for $2.99 is a great floating minnow bait and if I was stuck to one lure I would pick a floating minnow like the original Floating Rapala, but now they make them in plastic for longer casting and all you really need in fishing is this.. 1- few floating minnow baits 2-few crankbaits- stick to square bills, don't need to buy expensive ones, get 1 in chrome, 1 in gold, 1 in a color to match local forage or that you like 3-popper and walking bait- few spinners or spinnerbaits, pack of worm hooks, then pick a few packs of plastic worms....You could get by just buying plastics and terminal tackle, however, having different lures to use like a popper, walk the dog type lure, lipless cranks etc...make fishing more fun, and nothing beats a topwater strike...Oh yeah, get a booyah or bps weedless frog if can only afford 1 topwater lure, for worms, the bass pro swizzle stick is awesome and will produce when everyone else is striking out on the senko... ABW Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 Add 20 more bucks to your budget and you can get a Pflueger Trion combo for 60$ and then some fishing line and tackle. 1 Quote
Djman72 Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 I would recommend going to a local tackle store (Cabelas or BPS if you have one close by) and grabbing a staffer and explain your situation. They'll show you some good buys and maybe a few tips/tricks along the way. Also, be ready to spend more than 60 bucks after this first trip. The curiosity turns into a hobby, then an addiction.... Be Warned! Quote
superbass301 Posted February 17, 2015 Author Posted February 17, 2015 Hey I found a good webpage in field and stream: www.fieldandstream.com/articles/fishing/.../50-bass-outfit Seems like I could whip up a good bass fishing kit with the stuff in the article just to get started... Quote
SFL BassHunter Posted February 17, 2015 Posted February 17, 2015 Add 20 more bucks to your budget and you can get a Pflueger Trion combo for 60$ and then some fishing line and tackle. I love my Trion, its small, lightweight and works so much better than a penn i bought before the trion and the penn was more expensive. I have the MODEL # TRI25X but if I was going to do it all over I would go with the TRI30X. Max drag on mine is 6 lbs. The 30 is 9lbs max drag. The 30 is obviously a bit heaver and weighs almost 9 pounds where as the 25 weights about 7. I would recommend going to a local tackle store (Cabelas or BPS if you have one close by) and grabbing a staffer and explain your situation. They'll show you some good buys and maybe a few tips/tricks along the way. Also, be ready to spend more than 60 bucks after this first trip. The curiosity turns into a hobby, then an addiction.... Be Warned! He is right about the addiction. I bought 1 rod and reel and was like, pffft this is all I need. Then I bought another rod and reel and said, pffft thats it I don't need any thing else. Then I bought a baitcaster rod and reel. I've also bought like 6 spools of line, for no d**n reason but to try out different stuff. 2 tackle bags (a small one cause I thought I wasn't going to need a bigger one, that was not true.) An endless amount of plastics, cranks and stuff! All in a year. Just try to stick to a budget. If 60 is it then get yourself a starter combo just to get into the sport. Eventually you will replace it with something of better quality but it will get you started. For baits, I really started catching bass when I bought stick baits. The BPS Stick-O's work well and are reasonably priced. I also just started using shakey head jigs with big bite baits 8" needle worms and think they are spectacular. Big bite makes some reasonably priced worms. I've had very sporadic success with cranks and faster moving stuff so I won't even comment on that. Quote
CHugh Posted February 17, 2015 Posted February 17, 2015 Zebco Dock Demon Rod/Reel Combo ~ $14.99 (I don't think this is offered at Bass Pro though) 10lb Power Pro Braided line ~ $12-$15 Pack of 4/0 hooks ~ $3-$6 Box of bullet weights ~ $5 Bag of soft plastic Zoom bait ~ $4-$6 yyeeaahhhh laugh about the Dock Demon.... fun as hell to fish with, easy to use, compact, cheap, ANNNDDD Zebco replaces them if reel is broken. I used one for about 6 months until a very large bass snapped the reel from the rod and while I was hand pulling it in, it spit the hook. Zebco replaced the whole thing. Quote
superbass301 Posted February 17, 2015 Author Posted February 17, 2015 Hey guys what would you buy to start out bass fishing at bass pro shops with only 50-60 bucks? Okay I take that back I don't mean just bps I apso inclUde Walmart. Quote
CHugh Posted February 17, 2015 Posted February 17, 2015 Everything I mentioned should be available at WallyWorld. Quote
Jsnider88 Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 If you're going to walmart, get a cheap combo. If you're just starting out just get a cheap baitcasting combo, like rhino. Yeah, yeah, go ahead and laugh. You'll be pulling birds best out until you get used to it, but it works, and catches fish. Get some finesse jigs, or heavy jigs. Start out with stren 12-14 pound test, zoom trick worms, and zoom finesse worms. Get some crankbaits. A few square bills, and lipless cranks. A spinner bait, bullet weights, 4-5/0 hooks, Stanley ribbet frogs, or if they have them, get a KVD sexy frog, or spro frog. You should be set. Or just get a abu garcia black max combo for $59.00. And just build your tackle selection from that. Quote
Aquaholics Posted March 2, 2015 Posted March 2, 2015 If u want a combo the Abu garcia black max combo is on sale on Amazon for 52 bucks. But it's a baitcaster so be ready for lots of backlashes. For baits is go with 5 inch senkos and 3/0 to 4/0 offset hooks. For line I'd go with 8-12 pound seaguar red label flurocarbon but if your really strapped for cash just get 10 pound monofilament it should work fine. I hope this helps, tight lines Quote
BigSkyBasser Posted March 2, 2015 Posted March 2, 2015 Starting out with basic techniques that are forgiving such as wacky rigging Senkos so definitely a pack or two of Gamakatsu (or other preferred brand) octopus hooks. You can fish this anywhere at anytime and it will produce fish. Would probably go great with a cheap spinning combo (try Pfeiffer/Fenwick) spooled with some midline copolymer or monofiliment line in the 8-12lb test range. Power fishing with crankbaits and spinners usually does one good as well but can prove less rewarding as they are fairly dependent on specific conditions. Where are you fishing? Quote
hoosierbass07 Posted March 2, 2015 Posted March 2, 2015 Here is how I started out bank fishing for bass a couple of years ago - one pack of soft stick baits (Yum-Dingers five inch size in Watermelon Seed color), one pack of Berkley Power Baits seven inch worm in a junebug color, and one pack of cheap five inch lizards in a junebug color, two packs of bullets weights (1/8 oz and 3/16 oz), and one pack of 3/0 wide gap or extra wide gap hooks. All I did was Texas rig those three soft plastic baits and I caught a nice amount of bass at a state park fishing in the evening time and city parks too that the DNR stocks bass in. I used two spinning reels/rods with eight pound mono and six pound mono. With those three different soft plastics I was able to present a soft stick bait in a watermelon color, a longer darker color worm, and a lizard that is very effective in the spring time. So three different looking soft plastics and two different colors. I wouldn't wast my time getting a baitcaster. Stick with a decent spinning reel - far more versatile and user friendly. Quote
