soopd Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 I have a cheap kayak Chute 98 and it is not the right kayak for what I am doing. I am looking for a kayak to fish out of. I will be using this on pickwick lake in some back waters. I need a kayak that is capable of tracking well upstream and stable enough to deal with some chop and waves. I have access to a lake lot so I am not worried about having to carry the kayak far. I would like one capable of covering quite bit of distance on the water. Really don't want to spend more than $500-$600. Thanks Quote

Thanks The price-point certainly limits what you'll be able to buy in terms of quality fishing yaks. But in that range, I'd look on Craigslist, and classifieds for used Wilderness Systems Tarpons as they track very well. You didn't mention whether or not you need to stand, so I'll assume that's not a need. There are other brands I'd recommend, but the best advice is to find a kayak shop near you that has a demo days where you can get some on-the-water time in various kayaks. That'll help you determine the best fit for you. As well, they'll have recommendations for you specifically related to fishing and the type of requirements you mentioned. Quote
kikstand454 Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 Try out as many as you can. ...that's the only real way to decide. .. but for distance/tracking I also have to recommend the WS tarpon. You can get an older one used for that price or a new perception pescador ( same as a pre-09 tarpon) for around that new at the box stores. Another used yak that would fit that bill would be an Oceankayak trident. You want a 14' kayak. Quote
moguy1973 Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 I would look at the BPS Ascend FS12T. They are $549 new. That's about as good as you'll get new at that price. Used, you can find some good deals on Craigslist for the ones named above. Quote
soopd Posted February 16, 2015 Author Posted February 16, 2015 There is a used wilderness system 115 for sale nearby for $900 but I do not know if tht is a good price or if that is a kayak that will meet my needs. Quote

You can get brand new 2014 one shipped to you for less than 900 in either the high or the low seating option. http://www.paddleva.com/shop/all/APP02092-wilderness-systems-wilderness-systems-ride-115-high-outfitting-2014 http://www.paddleva.com/shop/all/APP02093-wilderness-systems-wilderness-systems-ride-115-low-outfitting-2014 Quote
Super User everythingthatswims Posted February 16, 2015 Super User Posted February 16, 2015 I fish out of a kayak that is basically the same as that one, mine is a 10' sit in. I have a fishfinder on it, and have landed ungodly amounts of fish/paddled many miles in it. I weigh around 150lbs and I can stand and fish from it (takes practice), in 3 yrs I have only fallen once, this is including throwing swimbaits and the hooksets that come with them. Quote
soopd Posted February 16, 2015 Author Posted February 16, 2015 I will use the kayak primarily in the winter time so stability would probably be my main concern. Quote
soopd Posted February 16, 2015 Author Posted February 16, 2015 Found a used Jackson cuda close by used. Would that kdyak be ok for what I need? How much is it worth? Guess I don't mind spending a little more but I am not willing to spend more than $1k Quote
kikstand454 Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 Well. .. your needs and price have completely changed. Lol. What it boils down to is this, wider =more stable but slower. Slower just means it is harder to go for distance. ...not that it can't. A native slayer 14 is the perfect blend of stability and speed IMHO. Its the next yak I want for sure. Ymmv Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted February 16, 2015 Super User Posted February 16, 2015 Cuda is a good boat and very stable, especially in the lower seat position. Is it a 12' or 14'? The 14' will be faster than the 12' but also a lot heavier to load and unload. The slayer is getting quite a cult following in a short time and i haven't heard many if any bad reviews. I wouldn't ming getting a slayer propel so i could pedal or paddle depending on the situation at hand. Quote
hoosierbass07 Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 I bought my Ride 115 off ebay, new from California with free shipping to the Indy airport for $600.00 It was the basic low seat model. I would not pay much more than $600 for a new basic Ride 115. Maybe $700 if it was close by. I would not consider it a 'cruising long distance' type of kayak. It's great for small and medium ponds. But for large lakes where you want to do some good paddling you might want to look for a different kind of model, maybe a Tarpon as others have said. But I don't think you can stand in the Tarpon kayaks. The Ride series is made to stand in. I don't stand much but some people say they are really into that. Quote
