Trying To Decipher

From my research I kinda know what rod for Shaky head and Football jigs I'm after. Just the following quote I'm not understanding.

 

A lightweight, highly sensitive rod, 6 1/2 feet to 7 1/2 feet, made of graphite with a medium action and a medium light tip.

 

 

What's the medium light tip mean. I'm assuming its something along the line of a moderate action rod?

Tip is not a separate taper but something you have to figure out. The tip on a shakey head rod will be lighter than a football rod due to lure weight.

It doesn't necessarily have anything to do with the action, just the tip. I've seen fast action medium heavy powered rods with "medium powered" tips. I've seen shakey head rods with stiff tips yet farther down the rod it had a lot of give.

That should say "medium power with a medium light tip."  It just means the rod is a medium power and the tip is light, (which most medium power rods have anyway.)  It is something you can really only know by fishing the rod.

I think some rods have multi tapers. Just stabbing at it but I believe the magbass rods from Loomis are the reason this is discussed. St Croix is more of a single taper. Maybe someone with more building and testing experience can clarify.

I definitely agree. I was referring to Loomis rods in my original post. Temple Fork Outfitters as well. I've read the same for north fork composites, but I won't know for sure till I build one, which will be soon.

The blanks action and tip stiffness are separate attributes. A "popping" blank may have a very fast yet action with a soft tip. I use these for jerkbbaits. A slop Rod will be powerful with an expectedly stiff tip but still have a moderate or mod/fast action. I wouldn't use dual taper as a term to describe either. Rod actions can be achieved through blends of various modulus graphite, wall thickness and other things in conjunction with mandrel taper. I also look at action and taper as slightly different terms. Some rods are lower in casting power then transition into beefy butt sections with relatively high lifting power. I consider this type of blank as having a fast taper. A high end light weight blank can have a fast action and surprisingly powerful backbone without an exceptionally large diameter butt thus not as fast a taper but still a fast action. Most of the blank makers with robust lineups will contain examples of each type. It's true though that the only way to know for sure is to experiment which is fun but can get expensive.
