Hey everyone, hope you are having a great day.  I was looking on TW to waste some time and I saw the Cush-It Big Bass Rod Float...  It looks pretty goofy in the picture with Shaw Grigsby, but the benefits of what Shaw has said may out weight the goofyness. He said it was made to cushion your side/rib area when setting hooks.  That right there may be worth it if you are having a good day. But he also added that the little bit of weight it adds makes the rod less tip heavy which then helps increase the sensitivity.  He said he also had a few rods fall overboard and the one that had the Cush-It stayed floating.  That is pretty rad too.  I understand he may be just talking it up because he helped design it and he may be sponsored by them, which is why I'm askin yall if anyone here has any experience.  Is this something anyone here has any experience with?

I think I have seen Roland Martin using these on a few rods. Either way, they look kinda gimmicky and silly.

BPS sells something like this. Attaches with velcro just in front of the reel and keeps it from sinking. Good idea, bad design.

I liked the one Roland made many years ago on a flip stick... It was wadded up foam, duct taped on the rod handle! Lol... I couldn't believe it.. He said it protected his ribs and side.. Maybe so!

Just got my Cush-It in the mail. Gonna stick it on a rod tonight and see how it feels. Its not as big as I expected.  Gonna see if it helps the balance.  When the water is not frozen I will be able to go out there and see if it really does increase sensitivity, or if those jokers are making stuff up.

Only thing I dont like about it so far is that it says to puut vasoline or soap on the inside to lubricate it.  Dont really like the idea of putting vasoline on the rod of the butt. We will see...

As a kayak fisherman, I'm extremely interested in this. Please review!

Edit: whoa! Expensive.

1st thing, after watching some of the videos before i got it, I didnt see anything said about putting vasoline or soap on the inside of the Cush-it, so I was kinda annoyed to see that you were suppose too.  So I tried to put it on without the Vasoline or soap.  That was a No go.  I put very very very little vasoline on the inside of it, like as little as possible and it made a world of difference.  It made it a million times easier to put on and take off.  So I warmed up to that, but that little layer of vasoline is removed when putting it on a super tight fitting rod.  So this is not a Buy 3 and just switch them to the rods you are using and keep changing out throughout the day.  That would be a big hassle.  I was really interested in puttting it on my 7'3" *** Black/ Daiwa Advantage HSTA combo.  AS soon as I put it on it felt like it balanced the rod out amazingly.  I love the way that joker feels with that Cush-It on there.  It also feels very good on your side, as I did some practice hooksets.  I have yet to take it fishing as I just got it and its like an ice rink outside right now.  First impression is a good one.  I am thinking I may order one or two more...  I just wish they had a better color selection than silver, baby blue, yellow and pink.

Last winter fishing in Fl. I hooked a Hawg in some grass bank fishing. I wore a huge bruise on my chest/stomach for a week, would loved to have had one of them then. I think they'd be great for Flipping/Pitching when your pulling fish quickly away from cover. Brian.

After using this thing on a few outings I gotta say, I love the cush-it.  It helps better balance the rod by adding that bit of weight to the butt.  It also does help make the rod more comfortable when setting the hook.  There are only 2 things I have against it...  With the back being so large I think it would probably make trying to fit a bunch of rods with cush-its in the rod locker pretty tough... And i wish they made a size that would fit on some of the smaller butts of rods.  I have a few that it wiggles on and it would not work out with it rattling on the back of the rod. Other than that, I would suggest trying out the cush-it big bass float.

Hi Ataris, I just came across the Cush it and it looks like a good product. I am curious how it has held up, and you mentioned it adding a little weight, have you weighed the cush it by itself to see the total it adds? I would be very interested to know because I want to keep my outfits as light as possible but I could see the benefits of the cush it. I couldn't find anywhere online where it tells you the weight.

I went ahead and bought a blue one. It really does look funky and kind of takes away from the look of your rod and reel. BUT on the other hand it turned an extremely tip heavy rod into a balanced rod. It also turned another tip heavy rod into a slightly butt heavy rod.The interesting thing is that the Cush It really doesn't weigh anything. I was impressed by that. Also the material is soft and though I haven't fished with it yet, it does seem like it would protect your ribs and arm on strong hooksets or in a fish fight. Now if only they could make it look nicer kind of like the rod guard floats that seem to have gone out of business. Those actually look far more refined.

My buddy is a guide on Ontario. He has something similar on the boat he swaps out to different rods when a salmon is hooked. Really helps when fighting big fish.

I am not sure exactly what it is but for padding on a rod I would think you could use foam insulation for water lines or a pool noodle for even more padding. I have had some days where I destroyed my ribs fishing jigs. I need more padding but unfortunately its impossible for me to get fat :(
