If I see one more person say big game and it doesn't say as backer line, I'm gonna go punch it out on the heavy bag.

Go punch it out , cause it's pretty popular on this forum...

What's your Beef against big game?

I use #25 big game on my swimbait setup. #12 on my topwater rod.

I must have gotten a bad spool of it. Straight out of the box it was horrible. It was nicked and the memory never could be worse.

I have only been bass fishing for about 20 years. When I started mono was the only line available. Trilene? Stren? Braid came out about 96-97? Spiderwire and Fireline. were the newest and best according to all talking heads and I showed upon Rayburn with my reels filled with a whole lot of $ worth of line. My guide looked at my reels and said "your gonna riplips" and I did. Lost my PB on that trip because I depended on the line not to break because I was stupid. Fast forward 20 years. I love PP braid on my spinning reels and my one slop rod,  but I just don't like it on anything else. I use P-line cxx on moving bait reels and Trilene XT on contact baits. On BC reels, I am a mono and co-poly lover.  Hell, I'm 69 and too old to even understand 3/4 of what you young farts are talking about on BR. But, I love bass fishing and keep on keeping on.

Plum, I see your passing almost identical to the way Meredith Burgess did in Grumpier Old Men. Minus the beer, bacon, and cigarettes.

And the mounting of half the women in Wabasha.

Hello,

I hate mono.  I always have.

Before I took my "fishing break" we only had mono.  I hate memory.  And before anyone says that's on me... no, it's not.  Even the XL stuff will have a bit of the spool's memory.

Two things about mono and memory:

  • It coils out along the water after a cast.  When it coils, it moves the lure, especially if it's a floating lure.  I always found it tough to do subtle topwater at long range with mono for this reason.

  • I've had to break off line due to snags, and if it was a tough break, I'd get a nice bird's nest.

Running braid with fluoro or mono leader is much, much more forgiving and is just one less thing to mess with my time targeting bass.

Yes, mono is excellent for some things, but personally, I'll go with braid.

This comes from someone who prefers round baitcasters and pistol-grip rods.

Regards,

Josh

I find the more my reels are not in use the more Big Game coils but if I catch fish 2-3 times a week the less it coils.

If there was only one choice then it would be easy. There are to many conditions and techniques to be a one line show. If your into leader knots then braid does a lot but I will continue to use all the tools available because I can. Right now I use mono for top waters in very clear water and no cover. Braid will do the job but with as clear as the water is I think mono is superior in this case and I don't like leaders.

Well, let's see here....been fishing for 60 years now (just turned 70 this month). I remember, as a boy, being thrilled to get my hands on a spool of "real" Trilene 6# test monofilament for my Johnson Century! Since those early years, I've used a LOT of mono, with everything from heavy bait casters to UL spinning rigs. Use to use a lot of dacron back in those days too. Most folks don't even know what that is! :)

Then they came out with Fireline back in late 80's. I tried the original smoke line in 8# test and loved it. Have also used GorillaBraid, Spiderwire, PowerPro and Fireline, of course with a fluoro or mono leader, depending on whether or not I'm fishing on top or underneath the surface. Within the past 5 season, I've relied more & more on Fireline and PowerPro for many of my presentations - quite successfully too I might add.

The only rig I have filled totally with monofilament now is my heavy swimbait rod, This rig has an Ambassadeur 6500-C filled with 25# test Triple Fish Perlon (great line for swimbaits by the way!). Have caught some decent bass and more than my share of big northern pike on that outfit. Very satisfied with mono in that kind of heavy application.

Lately my (past 3 seasons) focus has been on using 2# test Fireline Crystal on three of my UL rigs for crappie. I use a three foot 2# test fluoro leader on these rigs and will never go back to mono again. Sensitivity is increased, along with casting distance and dependability. And I don't have to re-spool with "fresh" mono 3 - 4 times each season. I do not think I'll be going back to mono any time soon.

The memory a line has and that being a issue is a BS complaint really. Everyone knows L&L exists or you should know by now. Everyone spends a bunch of money on this crap so drop the $10 or whatever and get a bottle of it. If your not using it you are only shorting your self. Personally CXX is my favorite line hands down. It is the best line I have ever used and has everything you want in a line. I will also say it has the worst memory of any line I have ever used and comes off like a slinky. That is not even a legit complaint though since a few sprays of L&L and it good to go. It does some kind of wizardry to the line that simple human beings like me will never understand. I think it might actually be reel magic at work.

I wonder how many people will catch that.

No no, you took it wrong. I was pulling the rat-l trap in and a smallie took it. Tore my hands to shreds. Have since spent quality money on reels. My Lew's as yet to backlash and I doubt it ever will.

Sorry, I read it wrong. I mostly surf and jetty fish the salt. I use Bg and mostly Suffix siege. I like the way mono holds up against sand, rocks and fighting fish.I use it for casting plugs in the surf also. But this year i want to do a lot of bass fishing. Iv'e done it in the past, caught a 7.5 ib bass , and it was great. So i have a lot to learn about bass fishing. I know i'm on the right forum to do so. Thanks all. Have a great fishing year.

I could list the advantages and shortcomings of braid, could do the same for mono.  See no point to it as most have already made up their own minds as I have.

I prefer braid and that's all there is to it.

^ I feel the same about copoly.

A decade ago, when I still purchased mono- I preferred big game for most things. I like Cajun lightening for "heavy" cover.

Then I found power pro.

Then YZ hybrid.

And I haven't looked back.

Different horses for different courses ... Sufix Elite , Sunline Super Natural are two newer monos that are just fine ; Big Game and C-XX Copoly are just fine with KVD Line Conditioner . Seaguar and Sunline FC (KVD Line Conditioner here too) along with Power Pro and Sufix Braids make fishing a lot easier for certain tactics ...The key is understanding each , knowing exactly how to spool it on your reel and work with it .

In terms of sunline super natural mono, 20lb test for topwaters, I hear an awful lot of compliants that it breaks. Is this true?

I have used it in #8 & #14. Yes it does, (break)it's a easy handling line, but just a bit to frail for my likes.

Then if you guys had to recommend an non memory for of line for topwaters on a carbonlite 7ft m-fast with a 7.3:1 diawa tatula, what would you recommend? I know mono but what types, or is there any alternative to mono?

Just got back from BPS. Veritas 2.0 in 7'MH, 330yds of both CX and Super Natural, a couple of lures, mostly jointed shad raps. I'm puting on line tomorrow. And to KGB, if you are gonna use for topwaters, I'm usually found with Trilene. Not the best in the world, but I've never had an issue with it. And as often as I retie, being cheap helps. People calling me wrong and telling you to go with braid and a leader in 3.....2......1......

No doubt there are several that would work.  Softer is better when it comes to memory.  I like Sufix Elite (softer) and Siege.  Yes Siege coils after sitting for awhile (as does any mono, fluoro or copolymer).  However, although it coils on the water (for the first few casts) it doesn't seem to cause loose coils on the spool unlike some monos (such as Big Game).  I seldom use any KVD on my lines (except maybe when spooling) so maybe I could eliminate coiling on the spool if I sprayed some on the line before heading out the door.

I have used only one co-polymer, but plan on trying several more.  Some are softer than others.  Which type depends on what you are looking to use it for.  Recently read a thread where the guy loves Izorline Platinum because of its excellent abrasive resistance.  However, any line that has good abrasion resistance is going to be a harder line...and have more memory...to the best of my knowledge.  I'd definitely carry a line conditioner with me if I were using this line.  I spooled some 12# Platinum on my daughter's reel (because she fishes Senkos almost exclusively), but she complained of backlashes.  I didn't spray her line after initially spooling it.  Removed it and spooled on 12# Siege.  Haven't heard a complaint since.

I believe the issue of break offs has more to do with the #lb. test line rating of Super Natural  ... Bump it up and go by the diameter as compaired to monos such as Stren , Sufix and Big Game ...Your results will be improved !
