The reality is Monofilament gets over-looked. Everyone is obsessed with braid and fluro, and mono doesn't get the use it needs to. I think one thing that draws people away from this line is the stretch creates less sensitivity. However, you can easily over come this with using a very sensitive Rod. The stretch is a good thing becUse that's was keeps fish buttoned on the hook. If no stretch, more often than not that hook is going to tear a hole in the mouth and you will loose the fish. I also like the way mono casts compared to other lines. In addition, it's so much more inexpensive and you can change out the line you use without having much expense. In conclusion, you should pick up mono and give it a shot. It's a great line with numerous advantages.

No no no no.. Mono is not overlooked by everyone, between it and hybrid, copolys, I have about 50,000 yds of it, 1000 of FC, 100 yds of braid... I like it just fine thank you very much!

I love mono.  With the exception of one reel with flouro (bought it used spooled with new line), and my frog rod spooled with braid, mono is all I use.

You keep saying this, but I don't lose fish with trebles and braid. If you're tearing holes in their mouths, you're horsing them in or your drag's too tight.

Iv'e tried braid three times, hated it. wind not's,for salt water it cut's easy on the rocks. But it will cut your fingers. I have never had a problem with mono on fresh water and salt water.  Bass fishing i use mono. salt water fishing piers, boats, surf i use mono. This year for fresh water i'm trying floro. I use it for top shots and shock leaders for the salt. Now i'll try it for fresh water.

Hate braid. Unimpressed by flourocarbon. I use mono for all applications with no regrets. Who cares what 'internet Andy' uses anyway.

Don't start talking about braid cutting hands. There's been a few times that birdnest wouldn't work itself out and while pulling in the lure, it's been taken. Mono will happily cut deep.

Braid on 2 spinning reels and on 4 b/c reels (one purchased already spooled with braid), fluorocarbon on 2 b/c reels.  Everything else carries mono although I do plan on trying some co-polymers.

I hold the rod in front of the reel with the line  running between the thumb and index finger. I have always done it like this and am not going to change. When I set the hook with braid it cuts deeply into my finger.  I know I am doing it wrong and should let go but thats just the way it is .LOL

I am a big fan of Trilene XT monofilament for fishing for largemouth with baitcasting gear. I tend to go heavy on the pound test to combat the stretch issue.

Rusty, yes i can talk about braid cutting. i cut myself with it. Now you shouldn't be pulling on a birds nest that hard, There are post's on how to properly pick at a birds nest. You like braid, fine : keep using it. I love mono, that's what floats my boat. As long as we are all fishing.

No no, you took it wrong. I was pulling the rat-l trap in and a smallie took it. Tore my hands to shreds. Have since spent quality money on reels. My Lew's as yet to backlash and I doubt it ever will.

Sounds like the way Hank Parker holds his casting gear, always feeling the line in front of the reel line guide.

Green, once upon a time, back in the good ole days, here was the rule of thumb for your line:

Mono - for treble hook baits and topwaters.

Flouro - all other baits.

Now the pros are touting flouro for all presentations along with braid for heavy cover and topwaters.

I still go by the old rule and use only mono on treble hook and topwater baits.

Flouro for everything else other than for heavy cover and sometimes, topwaters like frogs and toads.

One thing I noticed missing in the OP was the line memory issue of mono which I absolutely despise with a passion! Talk about ruining casts... ugh!

20 plus years of mono was a way too lengthy unpleasant painful experience I wish I could go back and do over again, this time not using mono.

I have made the switch to braid and fused superlines and the only thing I use mono for is backing on a spool and that's it. No looking back and no regrets.

If you're having line memory issues with mono, that's on your end. It's all I've ever used and I've never had an issue with the exception of when I allowed my old man to put line on my reels. If it's put on correctly, it'll work just fine. The few times I've used fluoro I've run into memory problems. The occasional braid I use (Spiderwire, forgot which sub-brand), I actually love it. Love the diameter, the feel, didn't feel like braid. Just can't get used to the fraying that occurs to it after every lure change.

LOL, hey line doesn't stay on my reels long enough to develop memory.. I change out..Alot!

To each fisher their own, right? Right!

I disagree with this statement. The line comes off the brand new original spool with line memory and it does not take long for it to develop a new memory from my reel's spools.

The issue of line memory resides with the product itself and is not unique to me.

That brings up a question...why change so often?

Old habits die hard..

If I see one more person say big game and it doesn't say as backer line, I'm gonna go punch it out on the heavy bag.
