Green Trout Posted February 13, 2015 Posted February 13, 2015 As I have said on here before, I love unweighted plastics. My question is, what hook should I use for Texas Rigging the Plastics? I want to know what style (EWG, Straight Shank etc). I have had good and bad luck with EWG. What style hook gives you the best hook up ratio and why do you think that is? Quote
Super User F14A-B Posted February 13, 2015 Super User Posted February 13, 2015 I like owner hooks with cps, designed by Gary Yamamoto from 2/0 to 6/0. Some of those are slightly weighted for (rage rigging) I also like owner mosquito hooks in 3/0 for my wacky rigs, A round bend offset hook by Gamakatsu or Owner as well. Size depends on a few factors, as well as personal preference and line type, gear selection & cover.. Quote
Super User Catt Posted February 13, 2015 Super User Posted February 13, 2015 Straight shank round bend for every thing up to the size of a Senko & then its EWG! 2 Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted February 13, 2015 Super User Posted February 13, 2015 Generally 3/0 EWG or 4/0 EWG Gamakatsu Offset Worm Hook (thin wire). 1 Quote
WolfyBrandon Posted February 13, 2015 Posted February 13, 2015 The only hook I use when "Texas Rigging" soft plastics is an Offset Shank Worm EWG by Gamakatsu. The size of the hook will depend on the size of the bait. I've never had a problem with hooking fish, and that is most likely due to the EWG style of the hook. WolfyBrandon Quote
Super User Catch and Grease Posted February 13, 2015 Super User Posted February 13, 2015 If I'm using a thin worm like a trick worm I'll use a normal offset round bend, if I'm using a thicker bait like a craw or creature bait I'll use a EWG. If I'm pitching/flipping a Texas rig into thicker cover its always a straight shank tied with a Snell knot. Try them all and figure out what you like the best different situations. And remember it HAS to be Mustad! Quote
*Hank Posted February 13, 2015 Posted February 13, 2015 I use owner twistlock light hooks there the only hooks I use for weightless T-Rigs. 1 Quote
bassguytom Posted February 13, 2015 Posted February 13, 2015 Generally 3/0 EWG or 4/0 EWG Gamakatsu Offset Worm Hook (thin wire). X2 on this. Quote
scupbaron Posted February 13, 2015 Posted February 13, 2015 twistlock lights and even better if using around 6lb test is the twistlock finesse hooks ...thin wire but havent been bending them ...mostly use the 1/0 on them I find i get twice the life outa baits with the cps spring hooks Quote
Super User Senko lover Posted February 13, 2015 Super User Posted February 13, 2015 Anything Mustad will suit the occasion. After all, KVD uses them! Quote
Super User Sam Posted February 14, 2015 Super User Posted February 14, 2015 Too many options to consider giving you the one "magic" hook for unweighted plastics. The question you have to answer is what presentation of a weightless plastic do you want to throw? Wacky rigs use a different hook from a Texas rig in the plastic's head from a Texas rig in the plastic's middle. You can hook a lizard, brush hog, beaver in the head or in the side. Both options use different hooks. It is up to you to read what the guys suggest and then decide on which hooks are best for what unweighted plastic you are throwing. Since I fish in a lot of structure flipping and pitching, I use weedless hooks for my Texas and wacky Senkos presentations. For bigger plastics, like brush hogs and lizards, I use an EWG Texas rigged hook. I use a small #1 or 1/0 for unweighted trick worms fished Texas or wacky. This year you can experiment with different hook styles and brands and let us know at the end of the season which ones you liked best and which ones produced the most strikes. As for the brand, all name brands are fine. Select the one you like best. Quote

Super User rippin-lips Posted February 14, 2015 Super User Posted February 14, 2015 Anything Mustad will suit the occasion. After all, KVD uses them! I read that somewhere on here once. Has to be true. I like using owner beast 8/0 and zoom trick worms. Really gives it a nice action on the fall. Quote
Sherlock 60 Posted February 14, 2015 Posted February 14, 2015 I've used Gammy EWG for years. But I committed to Owner Twistlock for a full season to try them out. However. I seemed to lose more fish. Back to Gamakatsu last year, but was very pleased experimenting with VMC EWG Long Shank hooks. Plastics lasted longer due to the long shank. I mostly use either 3/0 or 4/0 depending on size of plastic. Quote
