I bought a spinning rod before I really knew anything about fishing. It is a Shakespeare Ugly Stik Lite, 2 piece 6' 6" Medium action, I think Medium power. I don't plan on buying any new spinning rods anytime soon(I'm getting into baitcasters) so I was wondering what the best applications are for this rod. Also # and type of line for application would be appreciated too.

Couldn't tell you. For starters, I never use a multiple piece rod. I rarely use a spinning outfit unless I'm throwing ultra light stuff.

Medium action rods are a very good general rod for fishing. You can use it for shake head, drop shot, weightless senko, swimming a grub, light Texas rigged worms, smaller jigs etc.

Make and model would help a lot

It's a shakespeare Ugly Stik Lite. Not very high quality so I doubt many people have a ton of experience with them

Don't hate on it. Have to start somewhere. How many people skipped the old pushbuttons and went straight to baitcasters? Not many.

That rod could be used for whatever technique you want as long as its more or less within the lure weight rating.

You could throw treble hook baits with it, cranks etc.. Live/dead bait presentations, make it a go fast rod for car use..you can find a use for it.

# 8 is a startling point on line.. Should be line and lure ratings on that stix somewhere...

What have you used it for to up to this point?

Up to this point I've used spinner baits, spoons for trout, jigs for pike and that's probably about it. That was when I was mostly just fishing to catch anything, not bass specifically.

The Ugly Stik Lite is a better rod than the standard Ugly Stik.  I believe it is graphite so it should have some sensitivity.  Use it for TX rigs, small crankbaits and jerkbaits, inline spinners, shaky heads, anything that doesn't weigh too much.  It will make a decent travel rod since it's a 2 piece.

Line ratiing is 6-15lb. I was thinking of putting #10 Mono or #12 Fluro just because I have an extra spool of it already. Rod doesn't have a lure size rating but I assume it's 1/4 to about 5/8.

I didn't notice it was graphite until you mentioned it! Didn't even notice it said it on the rod haha

I like Medium action rods for jerkbaits and cranks because you don't tear the hooks out of a fish's mouth because the rod is too stiff. Also, the medium loads up better with balsa baits like I prefer. And yes, I have a few 2 section rods just in case I don't have a secure way to bring my single piece rods

What you have is the standard all purpose rod, stay within the lure and line ratings and whatever you want to use it for it will be fine.

I'd set it up with 20# braid, and get a small chest pack for fly fishing. Load it up with a few simple baits, hooks, and leader line, and keep it all in the car. Toss a scale and a camera in with the mix and you're trophy hunting anywhere you drive.

I got that same rod as a gift about ten years ago when I got back into fishing. It served its purpose well for three years till I got the bug and made upgrades. It still sits on the front deck of my ranger with my arsenal of set-ups. It has plenty of backbone which many people like, because it is hard to break. The Lite series also has decent sensitivity compared to the original ugly stick. It may not be an expensive rod but that doesn't mean it isn't a good one. Enjoy that rod well it works for you, you can empty your life savings after the bait monkey gets you later on

I have that same rod with a quantum reel, I actually use it for small top water lures. Jitterbugs, small prop lures ect. Works great for the small ones it's hard to throw on my baitcasters. Had that rod for years and love it.

It may not be the most expensive rod out there but it will take a lot to destroy it. I would personally throw almost everything (up to the lure weight limit) on it. But if you are concerned about the sensitivity, then just use it for topwaters, cranks, spinnerbaits, etc. Throw some braid on there to make up for the flex.

I have a rod similar to the one you have, its a 7 foot medium power medium action, and I can tell you it will work for anything. Since it's an ugly stick I wouldn't be concerned about breaking it throwing anything above the rated weight.
