Smokinal Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 We had been having hot water issues for years, getting worse every year. Well, I had enough. I knew it was probably a partially blocked coil but just didn't want to dive into the boiler. I did a little more diag and made sure it was the coil and tackled it today. Before During And after I was pretty happy to see no leaks after filling and firing it up. I haven't cut open the old coil yet to see inside but I plan on doing that. The old one was a little longer but only a single row. The new one is a double row and should give me even more hot water. I didn't mind saving the $400 labor I was quoted but it wasn't only about that. The sense of accomplishment knowing I did it myself and it actually works after....priceless. All in all, just happy to have it done and over. 6 Quote

Smokinal Posted February 12, 2015 Author Posted February 12, 2015 ^^^ It's a Thermo-Dynamics boiler and I just tried it out. Man it's nice to have a hot shower! Quote
Super User Sam Posted February 13, 2015 Super User Posted February 13, 2015 Congrats. Nice looking home boiler. Just a suggestion: How about moving all of the paper to the left of the boiler away from the boiler? Let us know if you have any problems with the boiler. 1 Quote
Super User Sam Posted February 13, 2015 Super User Posted February 13, 2015 Smoke, make that "combustible" items to the left. I just noted it is not paper but it looks like it can catch fire should the boiler overheat and the emergency shut off does not work. 1 Quote

Catch 22 Posted February 13, 2015 Posted February 13, 2015 Nice job, looks like you have talent. That summer winter hook up is very economical to use and it keeps the boiler healthy too.I have worked on and repaired many boilers. The ones most apt to give trouble and leak were totally shut off during the summer. I had the same scenario as you.I made and installed a manifold right at the tankless coil with 4 ===1/4" outlets. I ran a 1/4" plastic tube to each sink and the outdoor shower.I now draw about 6 to 12 ozs of cold water before the hot water arrives, instead of a gallon or more.I don`t have the volume of hot water from the spigots as before ,but it is very livable. It is a time and money saver.Be aware to use the proper tubing for the pressure & temp of the system. I relocated southward and now suffer a heat pump. It took 5 yrs to get used to that system My hot water now is electrical, but I did the same thing with the manifold. It works well. C22 1 Quote
