Rhino68W Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 I am limited to 2 combos on my kayak for the time being. I have 1 spinning setup with 17# braid and a 20# FC leader for dropshoting and other finesse approaches. And a Baitcaster MH with 20# FC that I plan on using for Jigs, Spinnerbaits, and Cranks. My question is: Can I still tie on a frog or pop-r to my FC and use it if I suddenly find myself in a good spot for it? I know it will inhibit the action considering FC sinks, but how much, and is it even possible? I am simply trying to figure out if I should even bring my topwater arsenal or leave it at home to save weight and space. Quote
travis23 Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 Ive found it to be an awful experience trying to wing it with flouro on a topwater. It just doesnt work good. With thag said, you COULD just cast and reel thr frog in. Doesnt work for me much, but i have gotten bit that way. Do you fish heavy cover with a dropshot? Quote

I've never tried it so I figured that's what would happen. As for the drop shot, I have never fished it before so I will be hitting any fishy looking cover/structure I deem worthy. Quote
ABW Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 You could fish your baitcast techniques with braid + a leader, and when you want to use topwater, you can tie direct with braid. Just my suggestion 1 Quote
Ozark_Basser Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 I wouldn't do it. Its hard to walk a frog without braid. Hard as in close to impossible. The popper wouldn't be a good idea either unless you were to work it fast, but it would work better on fc than a frog unless its the kind that don't walk. For me, I have to have a frogging set up. Super User Dwight Hottle Posted February 12, 2015 Super User Posted February 12, 2015 Why don't you just go to straight braid on the one rod & use it for your frogs & topwater. If you want to use it for drop shots just use a swivel & floro leader. 1 Quote
Rhino68W Posted February 12, 2015 Author Posted February 12, 2015 I would like to do that, but the kayak just broke my budget for a couple weeks haha. Have to wait to buy another Baitcaster, which I plan on running braid with. Quote
Fisher-O-men Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 Use the spin set up with the 17lb braid for TW. BTW that 20 FC leader is too heavy for Drop Shot. It will inhibit the action of the bait. Quote
Bigchunk Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 Fluro sinks, mono for topwaters, minus frogs and such Quote
Trent Wilson Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 I'm seeing to many posts about frogs. I have to get back to Guntersville. Quote
Super User gardnerjigman Posted February 12, 2015 Super User Posted February 12, 2015 If you are throwing a straight retrieve top water it will work. A popper will work, and buzz bait will work, and any kind of buzzing frog will work (horny toad/rage toad etc) You will not be able to walk the dog worth a crap. The action is seriously compromised by the sinking line. Quote
corn-on-the-rob Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 tying a decently long mono leader to the FC then tying on the topwater might work. Quote
Rhino68W Posted February 12, 2015 Author Posted February 12, 2015 tying a decently long mono leader to the FC then tying on the topwater might work. Didn't even think about that. How long do you think would work for it? Quote
corn-on-the-rob Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 to get a slight buoyant effect I would try as long as possible, maybe 5 ft or more. Quote

Exactly why I asked if he fished heavy cover. Definitely drop the line down for a drop shot. 12lb even would be fine. I would only use 20lb with really heavy cover. Read up on some of the drop shot threads on here. Quote
Heron Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 Well...all I can say is, Ive worked a Pad Crasher, and a Poppin Pad Crasher, just fine using 10lb mono. Im sure braid would be better, but mono has been satisfactory. Jut sayin. Quote

The action is seriously compromised by the sinking line. My thoughts exactly. Its not ideal to use fc line for topwater but it can still be effective if used like this. I used flourocarbon line almost exclusively this past season and still threw a popper style topwater bait with success. I also agree with others that 20lb line for a dropshot is likely to be problematic. I wouldn't recommend using anything heavier than 10lb line for a dropshot set up personally. Quote
