ak47soulja22 Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 My dad wants to start throwing a bait caster. He asked me to give him a recommendation of rods. I got him a bps pq to start off with. Then told him to get a 6'6" to 7' medheavy rod of his choice and price range. Well what I didn't specify was the action of the rod. So tonight I see he had bought a 7' mh st Croix mojo cranking stick. That is a moderate action rod. Now being that for an all around rod show I make a suggestion to go and get a fast or extra fast? Thanks for your help. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted February 12, 2015 Global Moderator Posted February 12, 2015 For an all around combo I would highly suggest going with a fast action instead of moderate. 3 Quote
ak47soulja22 Posted February 12, 2015 Author Posted February 12, 2015 He fishes normally with spinning gear. But we wants to try bait casting. Bluebass that's what my thoughts were too. I just want to get someone else's opinion bc the guy at bps didn't notice the action of the rod he was picking out. Quote

ak47soulja22 Posted February 12, 2015 Author Posted February 12, 2015 Sorry I meant bait wise? Matthew to be honest he is probably going to try to throw everything on this set up. I could tell him to throw a specific baits only but he is most likely to throw anything he can at them. Quote
Super User F14A-B Posted February 12, 2015 Super User Posted February 12, 2015 That's a glass rod, correct? Quote
Super User lmbfisherman Posted February 12, 2015 Super User Posted February 12, 2015 Definitely Fast action. Quote
Poolshark Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 The st croix mojo med/fast model might be better suited for all around bass fishing. It's a little stiffer than a traditional medium, it's a good all around rod. They label it the plastics model. Quote
EvanT123 Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 If you have the option to take it back you could do that. If not I don't think its a big deal. My first baitcast rod was a $25 daiwa strike force a 6'6 2 piece medium heavy fiberglass rod. I threw everything on it flukes, senkos, t rigs and heck even Bettie spins. It served me well caught a ton of fish on it and never had w problem. I guess "I didn't know any better" i moved on to faster and higher priced rods but I'm about to purchase a 1 piece version again. Point is let him fish it and make the decision. With the rod. Love some bettle spin bling. Quote
Missourifishin Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 That's a glass rod, correct? I don't think it is. Last time I checked the glass Mojo came in 6'10", 7'4" and 7'10". So I believe the 7'0" would be the graphite version of the cranking Mojo. To answer the OP, I guess it would probably work for an all around rod. But I think it would be far from optimal. I have the 6'10" glass version, which I only use for treble hook baits. I can't imagine trying to set the hook on a jig or shaky head with it. Quote
ak47soulja22 Posted February 12, 2015 Author Posted February 12, 2015 I'm going to try to exchange it at bps for him.the difference in the rod tips shouldn't differ much as in balance from a mod to a fast right? Quote
Super User Catch and Grease Posted February 12, 2015 Super User Posted February 12, 2015 The mojo cranking rod is probably a great rod but I too would say a fast action would be more versatile. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted February 12, 2015 Super User Posted February 12, 2015 He'll probably have an easier time learning to cast with the slower rod. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 He'll probably have an easier time learning to cast with the slower rod. Good point. Also, Moderate action doesn't necessarily equal soft, whippy or not sensitive. Quote

Also, Moderate action doesn't necessarily equal soft, whippy or not sensitive. So what your saying is should maybe think about keeping it? You guys do have a good point if it will help him make better cast as a baitcaster rookie then maybe sticking with the Moderate action might not be a bad choice. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted February 12, 2015 Super User Posted February 12, 2015 Moderate taper, graphite sticks are all the rage for everything in Japan. Eventually, he will want a faster action for jigs and plastics, but learning with a moving bait will mean more casting, and more practice. Quote
Super User tomustang Posted February 12, 2015 Super User Posted February 12, 2015 The 7'mhm mojo is a nice rod for cranks, you can use it on open hooks too but it really shines for cranks from wake to 18' deep divers. Since he is learning you can pick up some bigger square bills and he can practice on them. That rod and the 7'mhf would cover plenty of techniques. Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted February 12, 2015 Super User Posted February 12, 2015 I think you should take it back and get him one with a fast action. It's plenty versatile to still throw everything like he is going to do and they aren't hard to learn to cast either. I was really impressed with the action of my Mojo's. Quote
Cgrinder Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 Yeah if it's graphite, I'd consider keeping it. Moderate action with braided line is legit. Quote
