I got a canal I fish that's decent size and depth with heavy hydrilla..has anyone successfully punched heavy cover from the bank? Or have any tips on it or rigging?

Punch and Flip away. Just act like the bank is the worlds most stable boat. Better have a Broomstick Rod and Monster Braid, cuz in Fl, I wouldn't want to have to go in after them. Brian.

We have a lot of hydrilla and lily pads here but depths are around 2-7 feet wasn't sure if that's deep enough to punch

Its deep enough. In canals, its fine, but in bigger lakes flipping wont cut it. For bank fisherman like me, I need distance in order to reach the spots of bigger bass. But in canals, that completely changes and flipping and pitching and punching should be fine.

I punch cattails from bank and catch bass in them in a foot of water. Just be stealthy walking up!

2 to 7 feet is fine, and my preference actually.. So here's the thing.. Gotta get thru that top canopy of hydrilla.. It may or may not open up much once you break thru, remember its shallow, so.. Also how much weight will it take? Whatever it takes,

3/4 to 1 1/2 oz... It's going to be a fast bite so have stout gear. Do it & have a blast! A 7" ribbon tail is my choice, but a straight tale or even a stick bait works.. And others..

If you are throwing at a mat or pads far away you might have to do an extreme lob and get it really high in the air so it comes almost straight down in order to punch through from the angle.

You would be amazed how tight to the bank punch fish can get. I have caught them shallow enough you would swear there backs would be out of water.

If you have mats and you think there is 7' of water under them- my friend you're going to get your arm broken! That is a perfect set up in a canal!

Punch away! Take pics!

The lily pads in the big lake are a few feet to the bottom. The canal is hydrilla caves like crazy and absolutes 3-7 foot deep. I'll get pics when I go try. I'm gonna use some gambler craws and angry otters v

Have fun! I don't have any heavy cover situations in my ponds, but that sounds like a blast.

Ok Im gonna be the odd man out here and say its not really worth it.

But then again, youre in Florida, fish get bigger in Florida, and youre at a canal.  That ought to be fairly productive.

Me personally though, (as someone here once said) Im not really a fan of the prospect of hauling up a 2lb dink along with 4lbs of vegetation.  Nor am I a fan of the albeit, rare prospect, of catching that trophy fish and having it wrap my line every which way but loose around the cabbages, and becoming stuck and trapped in there.

When youre in a boat, retrieving a stuck fish becomes much more doable, than it is when trying it from the bank.

But thats just me.
