joelhains Posted February 11, 2015 Posted February 11, 2015 I'm getting ready to build my first rod. This rod will be used for smallmouth bass in rivers from a kayak using small jigs, flukes and other soft plastics. Here is the order I'm about to place with mudhole.com. The only part I'm unsure of is which epoxy to and finisher to use? What works best for you guys? I will be doing the wraps and drying by hand. So I guess an epoxy that dries reasonable quick would be best since I will be turning it by hand. I'm also not 100% sold on the handle kit. I kind of want to make my own handle from individual cork rings and turning it down myself. so I might go that route instead of a kit.MHX SJ8600 Spin Jig Rod Blank http://www.mudhole.c...00-MHX_16?ext=FATC Nanolite/Black Micro Spinning Guide Set - 11pc http://www.mudhole.c...66-7-Rods?ext=FHook keeper http://www.mudhole.c...ers-Black?ext=FHKS-2 Spinning Handle Kit http://www.mudhole.c...-8-Length?ext=F Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted February 11, 2015 Posted February 11, 2015 What are using for a reel and line? I'm not sure of the height of those guides but for a 2500 size w/ mono or fluoro I'd be looking more like 20/12/8/5.... for the guides. A 1000 size reel with braid you're probably alright. Quote
BassResource.com Advertiser FD. Posted February 11, 2015 BassResource.com Advertiser Posted February 11, 2015 Epoxy and finish http://www.mudhole.com/Rod-Building/Supply-Kits-Tool-Kits/Rod-Building-Supply-Kit-1 I would buy a dryer if you could. You can get a crb dryer for $40, unless you have hours to sit and turn a rod. Quote
joelhains Posted February 11, 2015 Author Posted February 11, 2015 The reel on this rod will be a Shimano Stradic 1000 with 8# braid. A dryer might not be a bad idea for only $40. Quote
Ben Eipert Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 Definitely do not use quickset epoxy on wraps. Go with the finish made for them. On the guide set I would also check out the nano microguide sets. It will save some money to put towards the rod dryer and I have had great luck with them. Make sure you get masking tape also. That stuff is super handy. Quote
joelhains Posted February 12, 2015 Author Posted February 12, 2015 I looked at the nano microguides. Are they just metal rings or do they have an insert? They look like just metal to me from the pics I looked at. How do they hold up to braid? That concern was the reason I planned on going with the guides above. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 Brand? Model? Pac Bay's Minima4 ring-less guides use hard stainless and hold up perfectly well. They are super light and affordable as well. Get the 4's over the 3's as they are double swaged. Quote
