HogsAndHawks Posted February 11, 2015 Posted February 11, 2015 So the bait monkey is being extremely hard on my wallet this winter, and after falling in love with Froggin' last spring and summer I think I'm going to throw down some cash for a Heavy 7ft X" rod and a tatula type r. Justifying it in my head is easier if I know there is more then a couple applications / techniques I can use the setup for. So what else is a heavy action rod with a high speed reel good for? (Hint make things up if you have to, I'm trying to talk myself into ordering hahaha) and any recommendations on a $150ish frog rod HH Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted February 11, 2015 Global Moderator Posted February 11, 2015 Should make a great rod for pitching weeds too (assuming you'll have braid on the rod). My frog rod does that double duty very well. Assuming you probably fish a lot of the same lakes I do that are ringed with water willow, I think you'll find it works very well. Quote
HogsAndHawks Posted February 11, 2015 Author Posted February 11, 2015 Bluebasser, I always lurk in the KC thread, I need to go post and introduce myself. I'm 26 and just got a boat last year so I'm kind of new to fishing lakes from a boat, which is why the sudden need for every setup. my bank account hates me. Thanks for always givin me advice! And of course it will have braid on it! Going to stop by Mondo tomorrow and see how much money I can spend My name is Bret btw. HH Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted February 11, 2015 Global Moderator Posted February 11, 2015 Lots of information there, we have a really good group of guys that post on the KC thread. Everyone's willing to help each other out and share some intell on where the good bite is, provided you're willing to share back Someone is almost always looking for an empty back seat or someone to fill and empty seat/split cost with also. Lots of younger guys as well. Several guys younger than myself and I'm only 28. Just bought a boat myself a couple weeks ago. Raymond's always willing to do some wheeling and dealing. Spent a few hours in there the other day getting him stocked up with my baits for the upcoming spring rush and trying to teach him a bit about swimbaits so he can start to stock a better selection of them in his store. Super User SirSnookalot Posted February 11, 2015 Super User Posted February 11, 2015 X as in extra heavy rod? Depends on who you're going to ask. IMO extra heavy is for casting extra heavy lures. I do have extra heavy rods, I use them for extra heavy fish caught in extra deep water. I can count the times on 1 hand I've used only a mh for bass fishing, I'm no fan of big rods when it comes to bass. Quote
HogsAndHawks Posted February 11, 2015 Author Posted February 11, 2015 X was for the 7ft something rod. As in probably longer then 7ft, 7'3 or 7'4 maybe. Bluebasser - I know, Raymond is a super good guy. I've only been in once and I wasn't planning on buying anything...he's quite the salesman when it comes to bundling things up haha. I'll break my silent streak and post in the kc forum. I've read the entire thing from page 1 over the past year and try to stay up to date. Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted February 11, 2015 Super User Posted February 11, 2015 I use a Fenwick AETOS 7'9" Heavy action rod for my frog fishing. I use a Calcutta 250 GTB reel (I think, I maybe/probably get my numbers mixed up) with 65 lb braid. This doubles as my A-Rig rod and I can also throw heavier buzz baits on it. If I had to flip and pitch with it I could, but I have set ups I like better for pitching and I don't flip all that often. Quote
kikstand454 Posted February 11, 2015 Posted February 11, 2015 A 7'x" rod in a heavy power will also double as a punch rod if you need it to. I used a 7'4" mh/f for a long time before I got a dedicated flippin stick. It did well with 3/4-1oz weights. It started feeling too springy after that. I never horsed a trully big fish out of the mat with it- but it landed its fair share of 3-4lbers. Quote
Super User buzzed bait Posted February 11, 2015 Super User Posted February 11, 2015 my frog rod is a 7'6"MH ***. i've also used it for some heavier football jigs and it worked ok for that. Quote
Super User lmbfisherman Posted February 11, 2015 Super User Posted February 11, 2015 Frogs, jigs, heavy cover/pitching, big spinnerbait, and swimbaits. Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted February 11, 2015 Super User Posted February 11, 2015 A rod like that could double as a lighter A rig setup, big crankbaits (if you back your drag off), c rig, big jig, flippin' and pitchin' rod, some swimbaits. You can find plenty of uses for it other than froggin'. Just a warning though, I told myself I could use my froggin' rod for other things too, but about 95% of the time I couldn't convince myself to tie up anything other than a frog on it. haha Quote
