FunkJishing Posted February 9, 2015 Posted February 9, 2015 what is the best application for the following? BRAID: MONO: Quote
FloridaFishinFool Posted February 9, 2015 Posted February 9, 2015 Braid = everything! Mono = Nothing! I should not say nothing- but I have not used mono for fishing for decades. I will not use mono for anything other than backing up braid or fused superline on a spool. I use braid or fused superlines for everything these days and I don't use a leader either. It is braid or fused superline from reel to lure. 1 Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted February 9, 2015 Super User Posted February 9, 2015 Braid = everything...with a fluoro leader if needed. Mono= backing. 5 Quote

Super User rippin-lips Posted February 9, 2015 Super User Posted February 9, 2015 I don't use mono but I do enjoy a good copoly like yozuri hybrid. Other than that exception I use braid/fluoro. 1 Quote
Super User F14A-B Posted February 9, 2015 Super User Posted February 9, 2015 Braid = Nothing Copoly, FC, Mono = Everything I'm not opposed to braid, I just don't care for it. 1 Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted February 9, 2015 Super User Posted February 9, 2015 More & more I've switched to braid for main line applications. All of these rigs, from panfish to bass, have fluorocarbon leaders. I do have one musky rig set up with 25 lb. test Triple Fish mono that I use with my swimbaits and for northern pike fishing. I'm not really seeing a need for mono main lines anymore, unless you're talking topwater fishing and/or some panfish applications. Braids have come a long way. Quote
SNK Posted February 9, 2015 Posted February 9, 2015 Braid - any of my bottom contact baits, with or without a mono or fluoro leader Mono - Most of my moving baits, such as spinner baits, crankbaits, and paddletail swimbaits. Also backing for the braid. 3 Quote

Super User *Hootie Posted February 9, 2015 Super User Posted February 9, 2015 Funny how mono is just plain wrong, and Bill Dance, Roland Martin, Jimmy Houston and countless others built careers using the stuff. Hootie 2 Quote
Super User lmbfisherman Posted February 9, 2015 Super User Posted February 9, 2015 Braid - on most of my setups. Leader when needed. Mono - Backing Copoly - Cranking Quote

SenkoGuru Posted February 10, 2015 Posted February 10, 2015 Well, I am in another boat I guess. Most of the water I fish is VERY clear and I am a massive fan of Micro Guides. I Fish braided line for Frogging and Punching thick cover. I use fluorocarbon for everything else except Topwater baits, That is what I use Mono for. 1 Quote
JeziHogg Posted February 10, 2015 Posted February 10, 2015 Thicker mono is good for top waters like walk the dog, poppers and torpedo types. 1 Quote
FunkJishing Posted February 10, 2015 Author Posted February 10, 2015 Thicker mono is good for top waters like walk the dog, poppers and torpedo types. good to know^ Quote
FunkJishing Posted February 10, 2015 Author Posted February 10, 2015 So is it safe to say mono is best for moving baits (power fishing) when the cover isn't serious enough for braid and when the fish aren't spooked enough to need fluro? and for worm fishing, jig fishing and rigging fluro or braid with a leader is best? Quote
Robert Riley Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 Mono: topwaters, cranks Braid: buzzbaits, finesse plastics and topwaters FC: Jigs, spinnerbaits, chatters, everything else Copoly: Cranks, swimbaits Quote
