Dirtjunkie Posted February 8, 2015 Posted February 8, 2015 Thanks in advance. I am looking to buy a spinning rod reel combo. I Normally use a baitcaster but I bought a cheapo spinning reel combo from Academy (Diawa Laguna/Cherrywwood, whole thing 50 bucks), awhile back for fishing mainly Flukes(my go to...), but it really is a cheapo and I enjoy it so much that I was thinking about upgrading it to something in the $150 range. I would appreciate any suggestions as I am leaning towards the BPS Pro Qualifier/Carbonlite combo. I have two of these in baitcaster and really like them, but would appreciate some educated input. Here is the link to the BPS. http://www.basspro.com/Bass-Pro-Shops-Pro-Qualifier-Reel/Johnny-Morris-CarbonLite-Rod-Spinning-Combo/product/1408290631363/ Thank you, Glenn Quote
Super User tomustang Posted February 8, 2015 Super User Posted February 8, 2015 Look into the *** Black and Pfluger President, a lot of bang for your buck For $150. Quote
jjconnaire Posted February 8, 2015 Posted February 8, 2015 Pfluger Spinning reels are pretty rock solid IMO. I have a Trion (their lowest model) and it has taken a beating and I also have a Supreme XT which I can say is amazing. Quote
Djman72 Posted February 8, 2015 Posted February 8, 2015 Another Vote for Pflueger President for the reel. Personally, I would pair the reel with a Fenwick HMX. I'm partial to Fenwick Rods, they're a great stick for the $60-$120 price range. Quote
Dyerbassman Posted February 8, 2015 Posted February 8, 2015 I've been looking at the Fenwick / Pflueger Nighthawk combo available on Fenwick website. $99 Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted February 8, 2015 Super User Posted February 8, 2015 If the reel still works, I would fish it until I broke it - a season or two at least, anyway. I don't know what is available where you are at, but I'd look at Fenwicks, the Aetos or HMG series. Lifetime warranties and their customer service is easy to deal with and you don't break the bank, staying under $180 for the Aetos even if you pay full retail. They have several different actions and lengths. I think a 7' MH extra fast tip would be great for throwing flukes and tx rigged stick baits. If you are driving your boat in amongst trees and other cover, sometimes a shorter rod is better. in their HMG line they make a fairly stiff 5'9" rod (I think that they call it a medium power) with an extra fast tip. That is the one I pick up first, if I'm throwing tx rigged stick baits. Quote
fishinphilly Posted February 9, 2015 Posted February 9, 2015 for my spinning setup i have a falcon buCoo spinning rod 6'6 medium with an abu garcia ora s for mainly weightless flukes and its an amazing rod Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted February 9, 2015 Super User Posted February 9, 2015 If the reel still works, I would fish it until I broke it - a season or two at least, anyway. Fishes beat me to this, by your own admission you enjoy it so much, why not just stick with it. Quote
Poolshark Posted February 9, 2015 Posted February 9, 2015 I would keep the reel and buy a good quality rod, there are tons of good ones within your range. Upgrade the reel when it's worn out. If you want both, i like the bps combo. I've been using the bps rods more and more and definetley like them. I put a symetrey on a bps extreme 7 m/f that I got on sale last year. I think the combo ran me 145. And I'm pleased with it. Fished flukes and senkos nicely. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted February 9, 2015 Super User Posted February 9, 2015 The President is hard to beat for $60, and the less expensive Trion at $40 is no slouch either. Pair either of them up with a Berkley Lightning rod shock, or Abu Vengence/Vendetta/Veritas (depending on how much you want to spend) and you'll have a quality combo. Check your local DSG's, or F&S stores if you have them in your area too, right now a 6'6" or 7' M Abu Vengeance paired with an Abu Cardinal STX is on sale for $69.99....and my local stores had them marked down an additional 30%. Ringing up at $49 bucks. Both are good "bang for the buck items, that normally retail for $49.99 EACH, so your basically getting half the combo for FREE. Both are quality items, I have had several in use for a couple seasons now, and I grabbed a couple more while they were on sale. I bang the drum pretty hard for economical gear here, and if it's junk I would say so, but all this stuff stands up to my use..........and abuse, and at the end of the day I have more $$ in my pocket. Dirtjunkie Posted February 11, 2015 Author Posted February 11, 2015 Thank you for all the replies. As I said, I really like the setup but just WANTED a better one, you all know how it is when you get the itch for a new rod/reel. I really like the look and reviews of the President and the *** Black, but think I am going to just go with the BPS combo. Mainly because I have two of them in baitcasters. I'm sure all the ones recommended are great but the main advantage to me is that I have a BPS less than 20 minutes from my house and have been very happy with the customer service. I once broke one of my Carbonlite rods, walked in the front door, showed them at the service desk and they said go get another one. Cant beat that deal. Thanks again for the replies, really wish there was something close to me with the ***, that sounds like an awesome rod. Quote
