Trying to decide if I want to use braid backing under the fluoro (topshot) or just run straight fluoro?  I am talking like half spool of braid and half spool of fluoro, not a leader.

Straight fluoro - Costs more $$, don't have to worry about reaching backing over time.

braid backing - Saves $$, have to worry about retying too many times and slowly reaching the backing knot at the end of a cast.

I understand pros doing this like A-A-ron Martens, since they can just readd new fluoro every day but it may be more beneficial for me to just run straight fluoro and change every 2 or 3 months.

yeah, I think you are right.  Run straight fluoro, don't worry about money and don't have to worry about ever reaching the backing

I personally run straight flouro almost exclusively. I hate having the extra knot, and running into backing in the middle of a trip/tourney.

Really it is just a personal preference, like most things in fishing.

Keep in mind that high quality line will last longer. I used a 100 yards of Toray SuperHard Strong for most of last year, and I only had to change it because I made series of "professional overruns" on it.

If you want expensive flouro to sit unused in a tight coil and go to waste go for it. If you ever use the flouro near bottom of your spool then you are killing your inches per turn.

Buy cheap braid or mono and put 80 or 90 yards of flouro on top. You can't cast that far and it gives you room for quite a few lure changes. And if you overrun, you don't have to dig through as much line. Also the line will have less memory due to laying in a larger diameter.
