ejtaylor822 Posted February 17, 2008 Posted February 17, 2008 After having my fly tying tools in cardboard boxes and no where to keep them, decided to make a fly tying bench. Started this over a month ago and changed the design several times. Used old scrap lumber I had laying around in the garage - spent less than a dollar on this project. The plan is to build a "prototype" then after I have it situated and arranged the way I want, will rebuild in oak and finish. Nothing is glued, so I can take a part and rebuild using better wood - one day.... : Getting started in the picture below. I had the left side complete and on the bottom board. Initially, wanted it a little lower than the back "wing" thread holder. But eventually decided against it and made everything level/flush. made the back thread holder supports shorter and it all worked. The next weekend when I worked on it, decided I wanted to make the back wing thread holder a little wider. So, chopped the first one down and put it on the board as an "orgainzer" and wire holder. Was a pain boring out for the thread holders, but, really like the look of the recessed holes. Got it complete weekend before last, but, was unable to do anything with it until last night. Tied a couple and really like it - nice to finally have somewhere to keep my stuff instead of the cardboard box. However, I am thinking the right side holder will have to go - wants to get in the way a little for my right hand/arm. Think I will attach it to the left side like a stair step and make a short one to replace it. Overall very pleased. The best part - I have $0.55 in it - for the doweling I use as the thread holder. maxke01 Posted February 17, 2008 Posted February 17, 2008 Looks nice so far. There is a local guide I am pretty good friends with who is going to show me how to tie this spring Quote
Super User Alpster Posted February 17, 2008 Super User Posted February 17, 2008 Awesome job!! Nothing like having a special place to do your work. The whole world seems to go away when your tying em up. Be sure to post up some pictures of the finished product. I will look forward to seeing it! Here's mine, made of red oak and basswood.............. Ronnie Quote
Super User .dsaavedra. Posted February 17, 2008 Super User Posted February 17, 2008 wow thats great! what a bargain too ;D keep it up man, maybe you could make a few of them and sell them for a good chunk of money... as for me well, i paid $0 for my tying bench because i got it from my aunt when she was cleaning out her basement. its a huge computer desk and i put a few plastic organizers on it. its pretty cool. i like it. better than when i used to be tying on my 1 square foot nightstand : Quote
F@bio Posted February 18, 2008 Posted February 18, 2008 Those benches look nice. I'm upgrading mine because i can't stop buying material. ;D Quote

Super User islandbass Posted February 20, 2008 Super User Posted February 20, 2008 Wow, very impressive. Good to see other builders out there. You've started my wheels turning and I might have to make a similar set up, but one that I could break down. A beautiful setup, but an eyesoar to the Mrs. : Alpster, yours is pretty cool too. 8-) Quote
Super User flechero Posted February 20, 2008 Super User Posted February 20, 2008 A beautiful setup, but an eyesoar to the Mrs. : Most of us fight that battle to some degree... my fly tying set up is also portable, for just that reason. However, I'm not as organized or as tidy as Ronnie!! Quote

However, I'm not as organized or as tidy as Ronnie!! Hey Keith, Those pics are just like my drivers license picture, I wash my face and cut my hair every 4 years weather I need it or not. You should see it when I am working on something. It normally looks like a hurricane hit it. BTW My little work table is very portable. I sometimes pick the whole thing up and take it to the kitchen to get away from the office phone. Ronnie Quote
