BostonMahhk Posted February 6, 2015 Posted February 6, 2015 Hey guys. I currently own a Shimano Sellus for my dropshot Rod. It does the job but I don't like their XF rating on it. The tip is very floppy and almost gives the rod a parabolic action. I want something a little bit stronger. I was looking into a St. Croix legend tournament dropshot/Finesse. Does anyone know how the XF action is compared to that Sellus and your opinions on a DS rod that may be a little closer to what I'm looking for? Thanks Quote
Super User tomustang Posted February 6, 2015 Super User Posted February 6, 2015 That rod has a great XF action Quote
Crappiebasser Posted February 6, 2015 Posted February 6, 2015 I did not like the LTB DS rod. It felt too whippy for my tastes. I went to a 7'1" M rod and like it much better. Quote
EvanT123 Posted February 6, 2015 Posted February 6, 2015 Sc3 69mlxf I don't think the legend would be much different. 1 Quote
Super User ChrisD46 Posted February 6, 2015 Super User Posted February 6, 2015 What rod bend then is ideal for a drop shot rod ? ...I would think you want a flexible tip to impart subtle action to the line / bait and a more limber mid section as you more or less just reel down on a strike to hook the fish ... Your thoughts ? Quote
BostonMahhk Posted February 6, 2015 Author Posted February 6, 2015 Absolutely. I agree with you Chris but like I said, the Sellus is just to flexible for me. To a point where it feels like the Rod is going to break. It's been fine for 1-2lb sm but im not going to wait to see if it holds up to 4-5lbers during a tourney. Another part of the Rod that feels cheap to me is the reel seat. I can tighten it down all the way and the reel still moves back and forth. Don't get me wrong, for $50 the Sellus is a great rod. It did me good for my first tournament season. I won 2 lunkers and placed 3rd in 3 tourneys and dropshotting played a big part in those finishes. I Just want something that's a little more stout. Maybe something rated for a heavy dropshot and something that feels sturdier to me. The gl2 dropshot had the exact action I was looking for but I've read and heard that it's not worth the $200 in any way whatsoever so it turned me off of it. I want to find a rod with similiar actions to that GL2 Quote
EvanT123 Posted February 7, 2015 Posted February 7, 2015 Caught this guy on an xfast selus And this one on a mlf at croix You don't need to worry about a smallie breaking your rod. Quote
Super User Angry John Posted February 7, 2015 Super User Posted February 7, 2015 I like the Fenwick mlxf bass rod I have. Very light and has some tip Quote
BostonMahhk Posted February 7, 2015 Author Posted February 7, 2015 Do you guys feel that St. Croix's actions are pretty much the same in each type of rod? Is a M Fast going to feel the same in a mojo bass as a legend tournament? Quote
Super User Angry John Posted February 7, 2015 Super User Posted February 7, 2015 No. The blank is a different formula. The taper will be simullar but not exactly the same. Quote
Super User F14A-B Posted February 7, 2015 Super User Posted February 7, 2015 Best way I could describe a LTB over a avid is to say its a crisper rod, yes, I have owned many Avids & LTB's.. No contest compared to a mojo.. Either avid or LTB will be a great improvement over the mojo... 2 Quote
BostonMahhk Posted February 7, 2015 Author Posted February 7, 2015 I currently own a Sellus not a Mojo. I'm looking at a dobyns savvy 7' ML fast and an LTB 6'10" ML XF. It's between the two right now I think. Quote
Super User ChrisD46 Posted February 7, 2015 Super User Posted February 7, 2015 What about the Abu Garcia Vendetta 2.0 in 6'9" ML for $99... Curious if this would be an upgrade to the Sellus ? Quote
Super User ChrisD46 Posted February 7, 2015 Super User Posted February 7, 2015 What about the Abu Garcia Vendetta 2.0 in 6'9" ML for $99... Curious if this would be an upgrade to the Sellus ? Correction - I meant Veritas !! Quote
BostonMahhk Posted February 7, 2015 Author Posted February 7, 2015 Idk of it would be an upgrade. I really like the Veritas but I had one break on me in the past. I have a 7'6" MH Veritas that I'm using as my Carolona rig/swim jig Rod. Plus I think the new 2.0 is a lot better than last years version. I Currently own 4 Dobyns rods and I love them all so I wanna stick with a Dobyns or that St. Croix LTB Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted February 8, 2015 Global Moderator Posted February 8, 2015 The LTB dropshot rod has a terrific XF action. It has a soft tip, without being whippy, but plenty of backbone to bury a hook and move a fish. 1 Quote
FlipSide Posted February 8, 2015 Posted February 8, 2015 I like my Dobyn's champion series 742sf for drop shotting Quote
Super User tomustang Posted February 8, 2015 Super User Posted February 8, 2015 It's a very nice rod regardless if you drop shot or not. It's xf action is unique, the blank is sensitive, the backbone is strong. I use the rod for a slew of techniques like jerkbaits, tubes, grubs, 4" wacky, shakey, and drop shot. Quote
