I just got a 7'1" St. Croix rage mf for $90 at bps on clearance! Need recommendations on a reel to pair it with. Mostly gunna fish 4" wacky rigged senkos and maybe some drop shots and micro cranks.

I bought that same rod last year, I have a pflueger Trion on it. It's their base model spinning reel but it is a good one. I use it for dropshotting and other small lure presentations and it's perfect for that. No frills but it works

Take it back to BPS (with receipt) but not

to return it.

Ask to try several reels out on it, you need

to answer the question of what's best for

yourself. We all have different preferences

for what *feels* right.

Me? Shimano Stradic 1000FI felt best and

balanced best in MY hands than other reels

like the Pfluegers, Quantums, etc.

So I became sold on Shimano beginning with

feel, then reputation followed.

But you may feel differently and opt for a Daiwa

or Mitchell, or other brand.

Seriously, try out multiple reels on it - even in

different sizes like 2500-size, 1500, 1000 and

see what feels right.

Whatever gives the best balance on that rod is what I say, pretty much what snook said..

It really isn't even the balance, I'd call it "comfort".  Not everyone holds the rod in the same place, that will alter the effective balance.  Depending on preference some do prefer a bit tip heavy while others prefer not.  It really boils down to the feel you like, it may not be what others like.

Addressing the reel itself reviews are not the way to go.  Not only are there preferences in materials used to make the reel, but size can be very important.  For example a man with larger hands may find a smaller sized reel feeling a bit awkward.  The crank handle may have a bearing on one's preference.  It's the comfort of the entire combination.  With all that said don't make too big a deal over it, the explanation is more complicated than the actual purchase.
