So, I told myself that I wasn't going to get a new rod this winter....but the BPS PQ reels are marked down to $49.99, and that's just a steal.  While I like my higher-end Shimanos better, I like my other PQs well enough that, at that price, I'm not going to pass one up.  So, with a new reel, I'm going to need a new rod (see how the bait monkey works).  I've got the usual stuff covered, with a nice collection of medium and medium-heavy rods.  I don't have anything truly heavy, though, and nothing longer than 7'1".  So, I'm thinking of looking for something longer and heavier.  My primary uses for it would be, I think, frogs and pitching heavier jigs and punch rigs into heavy summer growth.  I might also get into some swimbaits and A-rigs, though that would be a truly secondary consideration.

Do you use the same rod for both frogs and punching?  And, if you have a few that fit the bill, are they, effectively, interchangeable?

What length and action would you recommend.  BPS seems to have on sale some of their Carbonlite rods at 7'3" in HXF and 7'6" HXF.  Is that the type of stick I should be looking for?

Genreally speaking, any recommendations for that sub-$150 price range?

Thanks.

Rick

The 7'6" would be perfect, the shorter one would work also but my personal preference is to longer rods.

I do use the same rod for both, a 7'6" HXF...

I like a longer rod for punching (7'6"+) and a shorter rod for frogging (7'3"-). A fast or x-fast action rod around 7'6" would probably suit you the best, it's definitely important to have a long rod especially if your flipping/punching. It will be a little long for a frog rod but doable especially if you're in a boat or are relatively tall.

Yup, this would be a rod that I'd only use in my boat, and I am 6'3".  Thanks.

A 7'6" flipping stick would be good for both I believe.  If I wanted to do things in a very simple way (outside of your price range a bit so this rod is NOT a suggestion just what I would do if I were say re-starting) I would have a Dobyns Savvy 766 rigged with 70lb braid ready for a frog or a heavyflip/punch set up at all times.  When I got a big bite there would be no doubt about losing the fish due to the wrong tackle on either bait.

7'6" heavy action flipping stick would be the best choice in my opinion and one with the right action could really be a great rod for both techniques.

Perfect. Like dtack mentioned a 7'6" flippin rod would be great. That carbonlite 7'6" h xf should work fine. Or savvy if you want to spend a little more.

Also planning on purchasing a 7'6" Heavy rod at BP this week. Reviewng many of the rods in this category I see they have fast and xfast tips. I will primarily use it for pitching jigs and the occasional frog. Should I go with the fast or xfast? Thanks!

Thanks for asking this, as I was wondering the same thing.

Personally, I would go with the XF. For pitching in the heavy grass I want to quickest reaction from the rod I can get. The one caveat to that is make sure to give it a second on frog bites before setting the hook so you don't pull the bait away from them.

I use a the same 7'3" rod with XF for both pitching jigs & frog fishing. Took me a little while to get use to setting the hook when froggin' but you'll get use to it after missing the first couple..

Although you mentioned a sub $150 price range, the Falcon Lowrider 20 LFC-7-173S "Pitchin Stick" (their 7'3 Heavy Fast) model has worked well in both situations for me. Also, for $150 the Cousins Raze Series 7'3 Heavy XFast has also worked well and will accomodate lures from 1/4oz-1oz.

What helped me with the hookset was keeping the rod tip a little higher so I had the drop it, reel down, then set the hook which was enough of a delay.

Thanks for the help. Just left my local BPS with a new 7-1 PQ and a 7'6" HXF Carbonlite (the new white one). Feels great and balances nicely. Is it spring yet?
