Super User new2BC4bass Posted February 4, 2015 Super User Posted February 4, 2015 Anyone have experience with both? How would the carbon fiber side covers of the Primmus hold up? I wouldn't be using it in heavy cover. I'm a little leery of carbon side covers from what I read in threads, but maybe they would be okay if not stressed pulling 7# bass and 10#s of weeds. I can get the Primmus for about $150. Don't know if shipping is free. Pinnacle website is pretty sparse with its reel descriptions. Is there another Pinnacle with metal frame and metal side covers that I should be looking at? I have zero experience with any Pinnacle reel, and don't know of anyone using one. I would like to try at least one after reading the reviews on this site. Thanks. Quote
Super User Tywithay Posted February 4, 2015 Super User Posted February 4, 2015 I haven't used the Pinnacles, but there's reels like the Curado, Zillion, etc., that have a form of carbon sideplates. They're also considered workhorse reels. I wouldn't fear that. I believe there's some pinnacle reviews on the bass resource home page as well. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted February 4, 2015 Super User Posted February 4, 2015 There are several reviews we have done on both reels. Here is one which will link you to others: http://www.bassresource.com/fishing_lures/dhc7-primmus-review.html I have both reels and my preference is the Primmus. The centrifugal breaking system on this reel is VERY user friendly. Basically set it and forget it! This is Jeff's review of the Optimus http://www.bassresource.com/fishing_lures/perfecta-optimus-review.html Quote

Super User roadwarrior Posted February 4, 2015 Super User Posted February 4, 2015 Take a look at Glenn's: http://www.bassresource.com/fishing_lures/review-pinnacle-rod-reel.html The Pinnacle Optimus XiHS is a more "sophisticated" reel with dual braking, but I prefer the simplicity of the Primmus. WdyCrankbait Posted February 4, 2015 Posted February 4, 2015 I have only used the Primmus, very nice reel. You will, or should not be disappointed. Very nice ergonomics on that reel. Quote
BassResource.com Administrator Glenn Posted February 5, 2015 BassResource.com Administrator Posted February 5, 2015 Both reels are what I would consider "workhorses". I've been using them both for about a year now and have no complaints. Pinnacle also makes a comparible reel with metal sideplates - the Optimus 10 LTE. It's the latest addition to my collection, so I haven't used it as much as the others yet. But I'm very pleased with it so far. Quote

It isn't the side plates you need to worry about, it is the frame, most reels have at least 1 graphite side cover as it helps save weight. One of the reasons I purchased my Smoke reels before the Lews Tourney Pro is because the Smoke had an aluminum frame with both side covers being aluminum as well while the TP has an aluminum frame and graphite side covers. I have no problems with carbon or graphite side covers but if it is all aluminum then all the better but it is hard to make an all aluminum reel and keep it light without using some sort of carbon fiber. Side covers yes, frame no. Quote
