Texasraised97 Posted February 2, 2015 Posted February 2, 2015 Hi, I'm pretty new to fishing, and I'm having trouble knowing what terminal tackle to get to start fishing. Can please someone help me by explaining what baits are best, what they're used for, pretty much tackle box essentials. It would help me a lot! Thank you. Quote
Super User Darren. Posted February 2, 2015 Super User Posted February 2, 2015 Welcome aboard! Do yourself a big favor and hit up the articles on this site. Really, I was all over them before I ever joined up. Plenty there for both beginners and seasoned bass fisherfolk. You'll learn a lot here in the forums, but that is my recommendation to you. Quote

sprint61 Posted February 3, 2015 Posted February 3, 2015 I'll go ahead and tell you cause I know someone else will. Get you some stick baits and go from there. They usually provide a lot of action, bass big or small will hit them and probably the easiest lure to learn. Well besides somethubg you just straight retrieve. Oh yea I throw these weightless on a 3/0 EWG hook. Be prepared to spend alit of money it's addicting. 1 Quote

Super User Crestliner2008 Posted February 3, 2015 Super User Posted February 3, 2015 Welcome aboard! You've made the best decision so far in joining us here. Definitely read the available information here in the published articles. And it would help a lot if you included here, some more information. I.E.: what species are you targeting, what kind of water do you intend on fishing (ponds, lakes, reservoirs, rivers), and what kind of tackle you now have to start with. Then we might be able to at least get you on the right track. Good Luck! Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted February 3, 2015 Super User Posted February 3, 2015 Read all of the "Fishing Articles" at the top of the page and the attached links. Watch our videos which will also put you in touch with additional material. The Forum is fun, but you will move up the learning curve MUCH faster if you devote more time to studying in our library and take notes. Texasraised97 Posted February 4, 2015 Author Posted February 4, 2015 Im targeting bass and I'll probably be doing mostly bank fishing. What size hooks is best for bass? I don't wanna go out there unprepared! Thanks! Quote
Super User eyedabassman Posted February 4, 2015 Super User Posted February 4, 2015 Welcome aboard. This is a great site for info. One bait would be a Senko and you can get some small jigs and make a Ned rig from a Senko also.It is one simple bait to fish and it will put alot of fish in your boat. Quote
hoosierbass07 Posted February 4, 2015 Posted February 4, 2015 I would start with a spinning reel with eight to ten pound mono line. Then buy two or three packs of soft plastics - one pack of Berkley Power baits worms in seven inches, one pack of soft stick baits like the five inch Yum-Dinger or Senkos, and one pack of lizards around five inches. Then buy some round bend or extra wide gap hooks and a couple of packs of bullet weights, 1/8oz and 3/16oz. Also buy a pack of split-shots. Then you can do the Texas rig which is the most successful way to catch bass throughout the year and all over the country. You can also split-shot which is effective. But there is nothing in the world that compares to the awesome Texas Rig. And it's great for bank fishing too. I would not go down the hard bait route just yet. Yes, all you see on TV are the pros throwing crankbaits. But crankbaits are a low percentage lure and are mostly an overhyped TV sales job. Plus you can get them hung up and when from the bank what can you do but loose it? Start and stay with soft plastic worms, lizards and soft stick baits and the Texas rig. If you do want to try a hard bait go with a spinnerbait as it's not as prone to get hung up (but still not as great as the Texas rig). Then again, you are in Texas. You might have access to much better bass than I do here in Indiana so consider everyone's advice and adapt it to your situation. Quote

primetime Posted February 4, 2015 Posted February 4, 2015 welcome, you have come to the best site as many member's on here will not only share "secrets" but everyone usually adds something interesting that makes you want to go out and spend more money on tackle. Articles on the home page are the best...My advise...If on a budget like most of us, do not go cheap on terminal tackle.... When getting started, learn your knots, understand the difference of Braid, Fluoro, copoly, and Nylon Mono, and I would suggest starting with good quality Nylon mono line like Stren, Berkley XL, Suffix, for 2 reasons...It is the easiest to use without memory, and you only need to learn an improved clinch knot which is your best friend in the long run.. Hooks - I buy what is on sale, but you can never have enough Worm hooks, Worm weights, Jigheads, and every brand offers little differences. To get started, I would look for sales on hooks this time of year but make sure you go with brand names on hooks and line, swivels etc...VMC, Eagle Claw Laser, Onwer, Gamakatsu, etc. are all good, but do not every look to save money and buy some off brand line that has dust on it at the store since line is not fun to buy, but Extremely important. You can never go wrong with Strike King, Zoom, Yum, soft baits, few lipless cranks-Strike king is great for ripping and yo-yo, mabye grab a one knocker by Xcalibur or Rapala, few floating minnow lures, walking lures, poppers, click on tackle warehouse for best sellers and read some reviews...I find reviews where 90% of people agree = a fantastic product. Just don't do what I do and buy all kinds of lures only to find out that you really don't enjoy using suspending jerkbaits since you lack patience, and hate the feeling of not knowing what my bait is doing at all times....But they look nice in the tackle box for sure. Super User A-Jay Posted February 4, 2015 Super User Posted February 4, 2015 Hello and Welcome to Bass Resource ~ Since you're "new to fishing" I will tell you a that there is quite a bit to learn. Asking here what do I need is like asking "How do I build a house?" ~ there is just a whole lot to it. But unlike building a house, you don't have to know it all before you can catch bass successfully; but you will have to learn some on your own about bass fishing, especially in the beginning. There's no way around it. You will have to do some reading and if you chose, take some notes. This will help you organize and utilize the information effectively. The journey taken while learning how to bass fish is fun and part of what makes the eventual bass catching so satisfying. So as many here have already recommended, read up on Bass fishing for beginners and soon you'll be posting up pictures of the Big ones. Good Luck A-Jay Quote
