Joedodge Posted February 1, 2015 Posted February 1, 2015 So I started bass fishing in December. I've done pretty well, seen the bite turn off and on with the cold fronts. Caught a lot of 1 pounders and smaller a few 2-3 pound fish. Had great days and skunked days so far. All though the last week or so I've fished both weekends and a few mornings and a afternoon. And the bite has really been off. It got me thinking when does the bite pick up where these beasts are on fire? Thought I'd ask the more expierenced Floridian fisherman Quote

Fishing can be down right ridiculous where many begin to think that they are experts until summer time when they don't understand why the fishing slowed down. LOL.... 1 Quote

There are a lot of dinks but there has also a good number of chunks, and a few big ones. As Lou stated it will continue to get better in the next few months until the summer rains start. Glades fishing will get ridicules in March and April. 150 to 200 fish a day will be a real possibility. Keep dipping your lure and good things will happen. Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted February 2, 2015 Global Moderator Posted February 2, 2015 Florida bass notoriously go from slugglish to flat out shutting down around cold fronts. Of course they still have to eat but you'll have to find the ones who want what you're throwing, at the speed you're thowing it. If they're not in the mood at the right time, or in the right palce, and not interested at that time you might as well pack up and go home. Same may be said for bass across the country, but down here temperature, and conditions seem to have a greater affect. At least from what I've experienced. Bedding starts earlier here than anywhere else in the country for obvious reasons but the big girls don't spend much time at it. They can do thier thing more than once during a season and then move off to recover. Thats why more dinks are caught this time of year as the males are in the protect the nest mode longer. By mid to late February into early March it will seem that anything you throw will get bit. The reason is the fronts are weaker, fewer and farther apart. Mike Quote

Pz3 Posted February 2, 2015 Posted February 2, 2015 The bite doesnt turn off to much. After the fronts they do get a little lock jaw but you can get some reaction strikes still or try Senkos wacky rigged. Quote

I know guys who Like it more now than any other time! As a matter of fact, I was in a tournament on the Big O yesterday where the top 76 boaters and top 17 co anglers all had double digit bag's! The temps have been bouncing around, once we get a steady uptrend it will pick up. My least favorite time of the year to fish, inshore bite hasn't started in my area yet, bass have slowed down, caught so many up to a couple of weeks ago I'm bassed out. 0119 Posted February 2, 2015 Posted February 2, 2015 This has been the best bass fishing winter that I can recall. We have bedding bass and bass staging aggressively before bedding here. Since early Jan. they have been aggressive and fat. For me this has always been the peak. I fish tannin stained water which is less affected by colder temps. I find summer and fall the worst time to fish, less productive, the fish sluggish and neutral. Quote

hawgenvy Posted February 8, 2015 Posted February 8, 2015 Had a dozen 2 to 4 pounders -- and lost two huge ones -- today in the evening. Caught them from the bank (practically all I do is bank fishing) on a green Brush Hog. Tried senkos, toads, swimbaits and jigs, and all they bit is Brush Hogs, pegged T-rigged. I did better than I expected given post front and gibbous moon. Too bad I'm now out of Brush Hogs! Quote

Usually it works best wiggled across the surface like a toad, but lately they're eating it only on the fall, near cover. Seems to attract big fish. Quote

The lm are all different stages of spawn. Saw tons of fry in the 3 spots I went today with some slim and some very round adults. Including this one who I think didn't even know she was hooked until we made eye contact then it was on. She insisted on digging deep into the grass against the canal wall but I turned her around and got her out. Not sure of the weight but measured about 22 inches against the rod. I was using my new stradic 1000 ci4 on a Daiwa procyon UL, 15lb power pro, 4lb trilene xl leader and a 1/8 Spro phat fly. First and only fish of the day but definitely worth it. 2 Quote

I.rar Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 Yeah it was a battle. I love the fight fish of any size put up on light tackle, even more so when they are this big! Talk about an adrenaline rush. Luckily the water was low enough I could step down onto some rocks to turn her away from the grass. I actually did spot a couple peas but they were in no mood to cooperate. Both were very close to cover. Quote
