Super User Sam Posted February 1, 2015 Super User Posted February 1, 2015 On this morning's Zona show with Steve Bowman a drone was used to film the show. They mentioned that a drone can be flown to find places to fish ahead of you. In the future a drone could have special electronics that can view into the water with a sonar/radar system to find where the bass are located or even one large bass. If drones can be used in bass tournaments or if it is reasonably priced we could have a new way to locate our targets. So let's say you have a drone and your girlfriend or wife is in another boat controlling the drone and she will contact you as to where the bass are located or if there is some good looking structure that may hold a big lady. I have no problem with anyone using one to fly around with for video or other. As long as you still fish the same way and hope they will bite all is well. But one day they will have robot drones doing the fishing for us! Then it would take the fun out of it. Quote

Hyrule Bass Posted February 1, 2015 Posted February 1, 2015 i dont like the idea of using drones. its not easy to fly them for one. i think it could create safety problems on the lake. aside from probably being a general disturbance to other lake goers, i can see drones crashing into boats, swimmers, other drones, and the likes. i dont want one delivering my pizza, nor do i want one buzzing around my head while im trying to fish... I mea, obviously it could still be a bust, but I think it would be a good idea to see a few areas, and have a few different spots as a backup plan if you can't seem to find fish in your current area... I think they would have to have some additions to the rulebooks for drones though... But I think they could be very useful. Let's just take all the sport out of sport fishing I don't really think this is true... I mean, fish just aren't going to flop into your boat... The drone is going to pick up a fish and drop it in your livewell. I mean, if a drone is too much, what about the thousand's of dollars of electronics for boats you guys buy... I would relate them to being very similar, sometimes even serving similar purposes. As an angler you still have to able to make choices out on the water, and make the correct presentation, the right way, at the right time, in the right location. A drone simply servest the purpose of helping you with the last thing on that list, finding a good location. I think that arguements like this take anything innnovative, new and exciting out of fishing. It's like everyone whining about the A Rig... Anytime anything new comes along, it seems that people just want to shoot it down... Not the way I think our sport should operate if it expects to grow... 1 Quote

Point is, there were quite a few restrictions, fun hobby too. Apparently there are few restrictions on these hobby crafted drones, didn't a drone recently jump the White House fence? I generally hate the idea of drones for anything. I don't want my package from Amazon delivered by drone, I don't want food delivered by drone, and I don't want them around the lake either. I don't think there is any stopping this advancing technology now! I am sure they will try and regulate it and already are. What bothers me the most out on the water are all the water skiiers who think they own the lake and will try and swamp fishermen for the fun of it. I see this all the time. They even mark some places "no wake" zones, but those ski boat operators do not follow the laws quite often. A few years ago it got so bad on one lake here in central Florida the police were called in and they put police out on the lake pretending to fish in jon boats with the water line barely 6 inches below the top rail of the boat and video taped numerous ski boats coming in too close at too high of speeds and intentionally turning at just the right moment sending a wall of water directly at the fishermen (police) just sitting there minding their own business not bothering anyone. Needless to say it but some of those ski boat owners had an unpleasant afternoon after that. I'd rather have a drone buzzing overhead than ski boats any day. Quote

IF you're creating rules for the "what if" scenarios, then don't waste your time on it.
