A KGB Operative Posted February 1, 2015 Posted February 1, 2015 Hello everyone, first post here. I was curious on what my second rod and reel should be. I have a berkley lightning rod and a bass pro reel 6.3:1. I used it as a multipurpose and it worked swell. I was debating between a crankbait rod (okuma tcs medium+ with medium action) or a st croix mojo bass rod same specifics. Or I was wondering if I should get a jig, plastic rod as I use hard tackle and plastics equally. I know nothing about a plastic/jig rod but I love sensitivity and curious on what actions to get it. I'd want it at 7ft and around 100 dollars. I planned on purchasing either another bass pro qualifier (protip its 50 bucks the second weekend of febuary) or a diawa tatula(on amazon for 100) Opinions? Super User Darren. Posted February 1, 2015 Super User Posted February 1, 2015 Welcome aboard! Look at a Daiwa Lexa, around that price. Solid reel for the money. Pro Q is a great reel as well. Quote
FloridaFishinFool Posted February 1, 2015 Posted February 1, 2015 Right now at walmart the Berkley lightning shock rod is on sale for $43.00. Model SHC701C. It is a decent 7' MH fast rod for a very good price. For a $100.00 you can buy 2! I am going to get me a couple of them for spares... and I'd also recommend a *** *** rod for a $100.00. 1 Quote
Super User Jrob78 Posted February 1, 2015 Super User Posted February 1, 2015 Look at a Tatula combo. You can find the rod and reel for about $100 each. Get a F action for jigs and plastics or a R action for crankbaits. Quote
A KGB Operative Posted February 1, 2015 Author Posted February 1, 2015 Do you guys think I should get a crankbait rod or a plastic/jig rod? I'm in the chicagoland area. Quote
Super User gulfcaptain Posted February 1, 2015 Super User Posted February 1, 2015 I would get a good plastic/jig rod. Convert your lighting rod into a crankbait rod. The softer action of the IM-6 will work great for squarebills, spinnerbaits, blade baits, etc. I use d one of the lightning shocks for a crankbait rod for about a year as it had a softer tip and a composite blank until I got more of an idea of what I was looking for. I own one of the Lightning Shocks as a flipping stick and its very solid for the money. I managed to get it used for 25 bones, so it was a good deal all around! If you are looking to get into one rod, another Berkley rod I've heard a lot about, and would like to try for myself is the EMotion Performance series. For $80 I here they are a hell of a rod. The 7' Medium Heavy would be a good plastic rod, or the 6'9" Medium for Crankbaits. Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted February 1, 2015 Super User Posted February 1, 2015 For that price range I would jump on a Falcon Buccoo, I got one and love it so much I got a second one. Both are 7ft MH with Curado 50E's, only difference is one is 12lb flouro the other is 20lb flouro. Have been great as plastic/jig and my go to spinnerbait/chatterbait rods. Quote
Mr Swim Jig Posted February 1, 2015 Posted February 1, 2015 Welcome to the forums... I would get a good plastics and jig rod. I would definitely look at the *** *** Black rods. They are amazing rods for the price point. For the reel you can't go wrong with the BPS Pro Qualifier reel for $50.00..... But there are a lot of great rods in the $100 price range... For the reel Tatula, Curado, ***, Lews etc.... It is going to be all preference on how much you want to spend and what feels good to you, because what feels good to me may not to you... Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted February 1, 2015 Super User Posted February 1, 2015 Yes, a warm welcome. Check out what Tatula rods are still available on Walmart's website. I bought 2 for less than $90 each, but you do have to pay tax. Free shipping to a local Walmart. Have only been out with one of them twice and the other 2 once, but pretty sure I am going to like them a lot. Especially for the money I paid. JIg and crankbaits are best served with 2 different rods, but it can be done with one. I often throw crankbaits on a MF. Jigs are something I seldom fish, but I wouldn't hesitate to throw lighter, fine wire jigs an the same rod. I suppose you could do the same with a MHF rod with judicious use of the drag and the right line. I also agree the Black *** rods are well worth the price. Hopefully you can handle one before buying as they do have a very slim handle that turns off a few. I've never used a PQ reel, but you will find a lot of people willing to testify they are excellent reels in their price range. I have used a Tatula and reelly like it (pun intended). Also are a lot of guys willing to testify it is one of the best in its price range. I've never used an Abu Black Max or Silver Max, but they have gotten respect from some on here as being good reels to learn on. Nor have I used an H2O Mettle, but have read good things about them as well. Quite a few good options available, and even more if willing to buy used. Good luck. Be sure to let us know what you get, and how you like them. Quote
