Super User HoosierHawgs Posted January 30, 2015 Super User Posted January 30, 2015 The sales are coming up.... And there are some good deals on different reels. I'm looking for value for the money.. I've been browsing the BPS add, and the PQ is $50, the JM Sig is marked down by $20, the JM CarbonLitr is marked down to $99.. They all seem really good. Especially with the free line spool... I'm looking for a reel I can flip and frog with.. Which one of these would you choose? Any other suggestions? Quote
Djman72 Posted January 30, 2015 Posted January 30, 2015 I've not used any of the above reels, but people on these boards rave about the PQ. Seems like the best bet to me. Quote
Super User scaleface Posted January 30, 2015 Super User Posted January 30, 2015 I bought a Pro Qualifer combo two years ago on sale. Rod and reel for 100 dollars. It is my favorite outfit. I have Shimano Curados on Shimano Compre rods and like the PQ better. I cant comment on the other two. If I hadnt just acquired some new reels I would definitely pick up two more Qualifiers. Right now I need a couple of good inexpensive rods for about fifty dollars each . Quote

I've used it on my Veritas MH/F 7'3" as a frog rod before and it worked just fine. It's a very good reel at it's regular price, even better at half the price. I've never took the leap up to either of the Carbonlite reels, so I can't comment on those. I do hear the JM Sig series is a very good reel. I plan to get 1 at the classic, possibly 2. We will see, depending how my budget flies by with the other restocking I'm doing. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted January 30, 2015 Posted January 30, 2015 At $50 I'd be first in line and take every PQ I could. Quote
robster80 Posted January 30, 2015 Posted January 30, 2015 heck im gonna pick up at least one or two. tryin to decide what ratio Quote
Super User gulfcaptain Posted January 30, 2015 Super User Posted January 30, 2015 Flip and frog fish you want the reel that is going to give you the most IPT, but frogging you want more line capacity and flipping it isn't needed. This ofcourse is also up to what size braid you plan to use. If you're looking to fish 30lb, any of them will work. But if you're looking at 50-65lb then I would look into a higher capacity model probably in the JM series or if they have one that is close in the PQ. The Carbonlites are nice, but not sure if they would hold enough capacity for frog fishing. 1 Quote

rawjuice Posted January 30, 2015 Posted January 30, 2015 Go PQ, ive had one for about 4 years, going on 5 and its one of my most solid reels i own. Quote

Super User lmbfisherman Posted January 30, 2015 Super User Posted January 30, 2015 Blasphemy! Surly you jest? I sure hope so! To me the Curados feel more refined and more comfortable to fish with. However, it's not like the BPS PQ doesn't perform the task right either. I like using them both! Quote
Suspendingjerk Posted January 30, 2015 Posted January 30, 2015 Can't seem to find the PQ for fifty. Quote
Super User HoosierHawgs Posted January 30, 2015 Author Super User Posted January 30, 2015 Can't seem to find the PQ for fifty. I got the add in the mail yesterday.. It's gonna be fifty. Quote
Super User lmbfisherman Posted January 30, 2015 Super User Posted January 30, 2015 Can't seem to find the PQ for fifty. Starts next week in store (February 6th, 2015), Spring Fishing Classic sale. Go here. Quote

I'm looking for a reel I can flip and frog with.. Which one of these would you choose? Any other suggestions? The PQ is overrated. I know thems is fighting words around here but there was a time, not that long ago, when the thing was amazing for the money but that time has passed. There's $100 reels with 10 bb, aluminum frame with either dual or externally adjustable centrifugal braking, on sale for $60 with some being lighter than PQ and offering better handles and knobs or Korean production lines (PQ is china) with all featuring a smooth drag instead of the herky jerky thing the PQ has. Even at $50 it's not worth the $10 saving over a $60 sale priced Prolite, Nitro Tournament Z or the various Browning reels based on the NTZ. Unless you're after the odd ball low gear ratios, then there's no reason for go after a PQ anymore at least not until they launch a new version of the thing which I'm sure they will considering it's practically a house hold name. The new Carbonlites on sale for $99 is a way better deal. That reel blows the PQ out of the water. Stick one on a 7'6'' MH Carbonlite rod while you're at it and make sure you get the combo discount. Super User scaleface Posted January 30, 2015 Super User Posted January 30, 2015 Blasphemy! Surly you jest? They are the old green cu200's. They have a lot more miles than the PQ. Maybe when the PQ gets as many miles as they I will recant . Quote
Chris186 Posted January 30, 2015 Posted January 30, 2015 I have never used the PQ's, but I have owned the Carbonlites. The best carbonlites were the old gold ones though. I had a newer one, it was a good reel, but I ended up getting rid of it for a Revo S. That said, I wouldnt hesitate to buy another one if i was in the market. Quote

LunkercityVB Posted January 30, 2015 Posted January 30, 2015 My Chronarchs and Curados feel the best in my hands and I can break them down and clean them so fast theyve always been my favorites, however last year someone turned me onto Lews and for the money they cant be beat. In some most cases I can buy 3 Lews for the price of 2 shimanos and in the last year ive bought 6 and ive never had a problem with any of them. The BB-1 is by far the best reel for the $. 1 Quote

Super User FishTank Posted January 30, 2015 Super User Posted January 30, 2015 I have never been a fan of house branded reels or reels with somebody's name on it. With that said, the Pro Qualifier use to be a "one and done" reel. Meaning, you fished it for a year and it was just about toast. I base this on an old fishing buddy that would buy 5 new ones every year at the annual BPS sale and use them for tournament fishing. He worked/abused them hard but buy the end of the year, they would sound like coffee grinders and work when they felt like it. If the Pro Qualifier has become a good value, then BPS/Pure Fishing must have improved it over the years. Quote

I'm weary of it, because I plan on doing some heavy duty flipping/frogging. I'm also thinking about a Quantum Energy, but I'll try to get in store to feel them all. I'm interested to see how the JM Sig Series feels, I think it could hold up pretty good. Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted February 1, 2015 Super User Posted February 1, 2015 You don't mention your budget, but the Zillion model being closed out is an awesome reel and built like a tank. Look for a used one if the $200 plus for a new one is more than you want to pay. I saw a used one for $150 on one of the For Sale sites. Probably would already be gone if I had the money. Quote
