They are great, but they do tend to fall apart rather fast and at 8 bucks a bag he is going to be going to Bass Pro a heck of a lot. I would have to agree with SirSnook. Its best if he sticks to things that don't need to be replenished often. well tackle warehouse has big bite baits senkos for $6 for 25 and there the same as any other senko and idk if he's a bank fisherman or not but i am and i try to stay away from some hard baits often because its a lot easier to get hung up fishing from bank and more than likely your not gonna get it back Quote

One is tackle warehouse. I hear you he doesnt need to get Gary Yamamoto Senko's. There are other stick baits out there. I use Yum Dingers, and I've used a few other brands too that are cheaper. Super User SirSnookalot Posted January 30, 2015 Super User Posted January 30, 2015 $50 is a slim budget any way it's looked at, even saving a couple bucks on a bag of plastics that 50 number will easily be reached. I'd also look at the other side of the equation, make your sure line is in good shape, knots tied properly and fish water where you are less likely to get hung up. You may not catch as many fish, but you are fishing. I would buy local instead of paying shipping charges if possible. Can always catch your own bait, nightcrawlers in the backyard are free. I spend a whole lot more $50 on freshwater lures and tackle, but what I use to actually catch fish every day comes in way under that mark. When I first started tieing jigs I didn't have a vice, stuck the jig head into a cardboard box and use it as vice. Of course it didn't work as well but it did work and caught fish, so don't be afraid to improvise. 1 Quote

Fishing flea markets are a good way to cash in on some really cheap gear. You pay a door fee around 3 bucks then people have tables setup selling stuff like a giant fishing yard sale. Just recently I picked up 4 packs of hooks and a popper plug for 3 bucks. My dad picked up a spinning rod for 7 bucks. Check your local newspaper to see if you have any flea markets in your area Quote

In Jersey, there are no "dedicated" fishing department stores like BPS or Gander so I usually end up going to Dick's or Wally World to get my lures. I think the last time I bought lures and baits was back in August when my local Walmart had a soft plastic clearance. I bought 3 packs of senkos and another 3 packs of ribbontails and I'm still going strong on those worms! Quote

Those $1 spinnerbaits work, so do the inexpensive hard lures, Zoom flukes are very reasonably priced as well as other soft plastics. They carry decent spoons and bucktails too, not a bad place to shop for the budget minded person. High 5's to RW. Quote

I wouldn't say there are great stores for a budget, but rather, great brands for budgets. Store brand quality has really gone up, and the Cabela's, BPS, and Academy house brands of great value/quality for the price. Also, I'd recommend BIG Bite Baits soft plastics. They are extremely well priced and of high quality. As for rods, the Berkley rods (Cherrywood, Lightning, Shock, Amp, EMotion) are all extremely solid rods for the price. I fish currently all Berkley rods, as they are the most cost effective option for me. Good luck, it gets tough trying to get everything you want w/limited spending money! x2 Quote

Honestly I have used "cheaper" brands and have really liked some of them like gander mountain stuff (they have a lot of types of soft plastics) even though the selection can be slim at certain stores. Its soft plastics are actually similar to yum in my opinion and have nice scent. The key to their value is that for the same price you can get 1.5 to 2 times the number of baits. Berkley havoc is name brand and also budget which is awesome. BPS has some good store brand baits. Best way is to just try some of them and see. For example: gander mountain 4'' finesse worm - $3.99 for 20 ct gander mountain 5'' trick stick worm - $9.99 for 40 ct they have a good color selection online at least and really good reviews. The key is understanding that though not the price/"quality" of some higher end baits, some brands are more than sufficient for your needs. I have used yamamoto senkos because my dad has some, not only were different brands of stick worms cheaper and sufficient, I honestly preferred them. 2 Quote
