I am a high school student so I only get a yearly allowance of 50$ to spend on fishing gear, excluding holidays and my birthday. I will be going to ma local Dick's to check out their clearance deals, hope I can get something good. What are some good fishing stores for those on a extremely tight budget?? Quote

I wouldn't say there are great stores for a budget, but rather, great brands for budgets. Store brand quality has really gone up, and the Cabela's, BPS, and Academy house brands of great value/quality for the price. Also, I'd recommend BIG Bite Baits soft plastics. They are extremely well priced and of high quality. As for rods, the Berkley rods (Cherrywood, Lightning, Shock, Amp, EMotion) are all extremely solid rods for the price. I fish currently all Berkley rods, as they are the most cost effective option for me. Good luck, it gets tough trying to get everything you want w/limited spending money! 6 Quote

When I was in high school (which was not that long ago) I fed my fishing habit by working as much as I could... I actually bought my first bass boat (17' BassTracker) when I was 16, plus all the tackle to go in it. It was hard work, but I really loved fishing and wanted a boat so I made it happen...I sort of took it to the extreme though, working every night after school so I could rack up hours and kept the weekends mostly free for fishing. If you've got free time, especially in the winter...You can turn that directly into tackle . 2 Quote

The shock is great for jig fishing w/braid. The EMotion has a few different cranking specific models with cool blank actions. For pure value, the Shock is a great rod at $50. Quote

fishinphilly Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 im in college right now and I'm always broke, saving change helps me a lot lol but what helped me out a lot was berkley coming out with the havoc and now (first time I'm seeing it) yum is coming out with a lot of baits that are $2.99 but when it comes to rods and reels i don't like to buy too cheap, denali rods are great rods for the price with a lifetime warranty and for me the best reels have always been lews 2 Quote

You need certain equipment and even on a limited budget, you can fill those needs. What you want and your decision to purchase it is what can become a stumbling block reguardless of you income. Get a medium action baitcaster or spinning combo, spool it with 10-12lb mono, and go from there. Specialized rods help but you can still get it done with one setup. Get a few basic baits, squarebill, topwater, spinnerbait, and t-rig stuff. If you're really into it, the bday and holiday $ will go straight to fishing Quote

Try to establish consistencies in what works most/least/not at all. Stick with what works while shying away from the mentality of doing too much of "Trying this and trying that." I might stay away from plastics, those are always being replenished, in the long run they may be more expensive. Forget what I buy it's what I use, during the present bass season I'm in right now I'm usually catching at least 10 bass every morning. I've used only a Storm chug a bug, roostertails (only item that I regularly replace, mepps will last longer), hard jerkbait and spoon. I don't always stay with a limited number of baits, but this year I am and doing it for less than $50. The budget doesn't limit the number of fish you can catch, your ability is the controlling factor. Quote

Well Senkos can become costly like SirSnookalot said. They are great, but they do tend to fall apart rather fast and at 8 bucks a bag he is going to be going to Bass Pro a heck of a lot. I would have to agree with SirSnook. Its best if he sticks to things that don't need to be replenished often. Quote
