Anybody Ever Fished A Tube Like This?

Just messing around in the lab while waiting for the ice to thaw, I thought about trying this:

 

 

Basically, it's a four piece rig:

 

* A four inch or so tube

* An egg sinker of desired weight

* A section of tapered plastic (preferably from some torn up bait you were going to throw out anyway - in my example, I'm using the butt end of a senko)

* A 1/0 or 2/0 EWG

 

1. Shove the egg weight all the way into the tube, ideally it will fit snuggly and won't slip around

2. Insert the small end of the tapered plastic chunk into the tube and push it in until snug and flush with the opening (you basically want to plug it)

3. Inserting the hook point into your newly created plug, run the hook through like you would texas style. Skin hook if desired.

 

In the last photo there, I'm holding a finished rig by the weight in the nose. It seems like it'd work great but with the ice there's no way for me to test this. It's supposed to fall away from the splash point and go under cover, like fishing an reverse rigged ika, but with greater traveling ability due to the increased weight at the nose.

 

I don't know how well it would hold up, but it seems like you'd be able to get at least one fish on it.

 

Anyway, I was just curious if anyone has tried something like this, and whether it worked well or not. I have a ton of tubes I want to use up this spring, and it'd be great for me if this worked out.

The Ika is a go-to for me. I don't know about gliding further, the weight may just pull the nose down, but a faster fall and added weight for deeper water and faster current may make this work where the Ika wants to ride back up. It's fun to tinker isn't it?

I've run out of Ikas and "made" them by stuffing senko scraps into a tube and they worked, probably not as well though.

Yeah, it probably plummets down faster than away. I may try it out in the tub later, with varying weight sizes, and see what happens.

Love this ... I also use the lka but this is another nice alternative.  I can also think of adding a rattle along with the egg sinker to turn up the volume.  Can't wait to try.

At first I thought you had recreated the "flying lure."   Then, on further review I realized that you have created an Ika out of spare parts.  Sooner or later I am going to run out of Ikas and then I will be using your creation.  I will probably use it before I run out of Ikas when I want to present a different color than I have available with the Yamamoto product.   Thank you.  I'd buy you a beer to reward this idea, if you lived closer, but you don't, so instead I will drink a beer for you, probably this morning after work.

You pretty much nailed it with "an Ika out of spare parts". I also would have accepted "a poor man's Salty Core Tube". I will drink a beer tonight and pretend it was from you!

Was just thinking the same thing.  The tube will probably just drop straight down tho as mentioned by others.  I think the only reason the flying lure didnt drop straight down was because of the shape.  It was much more flat than a tube bait.

You have me thinking of other ways to use a tube. Cut the nose and slide over another soft plastic and you could have a lot of creations and color combos .

I tried something like this today after reading your post.  I took my four inch tube with the egg weight at the top, but instead of a senko I used the two claws from a zoom rubber craw.  I think that if this could be rigged like an Ika or as you proposed above, it could add some more action and/or flash and color to the bait.  I only had dark blue tubes and craws to work with, so I couldn't get the color effect that would be desired, but this could be promising.

This is a cool idea - skirt your senko with leftover tubes. Awesome!

Yup I've done that before but I didn't leave an air pocket in the bait so I'm not sure how that's going to affect it.  I like the action better than the Palm Tree or some of the other baits designed to glide backwards.  The Trigger X Hodad works pretty much like one of these modified tubes and that's what I use now instead of the tube.

I do the opposite of this I hang a drop shot weight from my hook so the tube falls strait down with the legs flaring out and when I stop it or twitch it the legs fall flat.
