Smith And Wesson M&p Shield

Sooooo......................been pistol shopping, thought I really liked the Glock 19, enough so that I put a deposit down on one waiting for Uncle Sam to return my interest free loan that I gave him for the last 12 mos. BUT that was before I handled the M&P Shield in 9mm. The Glock was the winner between the pistols I had handled up to that point (Springfield XDS, Sig P250, a bunch of compact 1911's, Beretta PX4, Ruger LC9...and more that I forgot). The dealer said if I changed my mind between now and then my deposit for the Glock would be returned in full no ?'s asked. I can't get the Shield out of my head now, it just felt better in my hands, I liked the slimmer grip, and the size of it for a CC pistol better. I have seen some complaining of the trigger on the M&P's, but I handled both the Shield and the Glock again side by side the other day, and I just liked the Shield better (trigger and all) plus it's less expensive. Mag capacity is less on the Shield (8+1 vs. 10+1 on the Glock here in restricted NYS) but coming from using/carrying full sized 1911's all my life, mag size is not an issue. Am I crazy for wanting the Shield over the Glock? Plus I want to add a few more pistols to the safe in the near future and really liked the entire M&P line, my OCD would be kept in check if I added an M&P in .45 acp, and .22LR along with the Shield.......

I like the Shield in 9, not so much in 40 due to the snap. I prefer anything M&P over Glock IN MY HANDS (there will inevitably be someone who takes offense to that statement LOL).

 

In the winter, dressed for conditions, I carry the 45c without any imprinting issues. I don't think you are crazy at all.

Let me just say I am a big fan of Glock. We are issued Glock 17's and I really enjoy shooting it, feels great in my hand and finding sight picture is really easy to me. That being said, I traded my Glock 23 that I used for off duty carry to one of our Lt's for a Shield 9MM a few months ago. I needed something thinner since I have a little tactical girth around the midsection, and the glock stuck out just a little too far for my liking. I've heard all about how people dislike the M&P triggers. I have fired several of these weapons, from the full size all the way down to the compact and I have to admit I like the triggers. They're crisp yet smooth, if that makes sense. If you do end up getting the shield you'll fall in love with how conealable it is.

I have a buddy who has a shield, he let me fire it a few weeks ago. Its a really nice pistol, as is anything in the M&P line. I say go for it, then again im not much of a glock fan to begin with. They dont fit my hand good at all, thats really the only reason I dont like them.

I've carried a Glock 27 for about 15 years.  I love the gun and shoot it really well after years of practice.  I'm seriously considering a Shield or a Kahr for summertime carry.  It isn't that the overall size is smaller, it's the thickness that makes a difference for IWB carry.  Plus, they feel great in the hand.  I might even go with the "lowly" 9MM.  lol

Love my shield and carry it daily. I carry mine with the 7 round and the 8 as the spare with Winchester pdx 124+p.

I guess I'll be the first to say pick up some talon grips or similar. I have the rubber texture talon grips on mine and it's a night and day difference in handling. Definitely worth the $15 or whatever they charge now. The sandpaper texture is supposed to be a bit more rough and meant more for range guns than carry.

I actually just sold a iwb kydex holster on another forum for the cheaps. It was an on your 6 designs brand that they usually have on sale for $30. Good product with great CS if you'll ever need it.

My dad has the Kahr CW9. Nice thin pistol that feels really nice in the hand. Only issue I have with it is the long trigger reset, but it wouldn't stop me from carrying one.

Well, I fired this pistol (S&W M/P Shield 9) the other day before blindly buying...........and I am glad I did. A small pistol like that is going to take some getting used to.....And I did not like the trigger on it at all. So I went back to the drawing board...........and the gun stores looking for a little "bigger" polymer framed 9mm. I handled them all, at least all that were available locally. Glock 19's, Smith and Wesson M&P 9's AND SD9VE, Ruger SR9, Sig P250, some FN one I cant remember the model # of, and a couple of more that were, IMHO, forget-able. AND, pardon the pun....pulled the trigger on the one that felt the best in my hand, had the most tolerable trigger, and gave me the most "bang for the buck" , or so I think.....the Ruger SR9. In defense of the Glock, it came down to the Ruger and the Glock 19, but the Ruger was $459...and the Glock 19 gen4 was $600 before tax....I have to make my dollar stretch a little further than that. I have always liked Ruger products, so I am fairly comfortable with this (unless it turns out to be a lemon), and like I said the Ruger just felt better in my hand..............which is exactly what the salesmen said ALL 1911 guys (like me) say when they are looking at these guns LOL. Will probably pick it up in a couple days, NYS makes you take the receipt to the permit office, have it added to your permit, then gives you a "slip" to give to the dealer before they give it to you, and the dealer is 50 miles away so I am not going to run right back up there...........even though it's killing me LOL.

Black or stainless?    I've been eyeballin' the SR9c in stainless for my next one, although I have not had one in my hands yet to see how it feels.

Ww2farmer if you get a chance try the SR9c. With the 17 round mag it feels much like the 9. With the 10 round and the finger extension it shoots well and is fairly easy to carry. I love mine and would not take a new Glock 19 or 26 for it.

I heard bad things about the sig p250 trigger when I was thinking about a Sig. I still want the 320c one day. I already have my next guns lined up. Lol

2 of them I'm getting in the next couple of weeks.

That is a nice gun.  I got the SR9c in black and my wife got the stainless one.  I preferred the 9c due to the smaller carrying profile, but a big guy can conceal the regular SR9 pretty easy.  Nice choice.  Now if Magpul or someone else would make aftermarket mags for the thing.

Bought my wife a Shield, added an Apex trigger and Viridian green laser/light.  Great gun, trigger job is essential in my opinion.

I'm not a fan of the trigger on the M&P, so much so that I went with an Apex before I ever fired mine.  I'm in the 'don't care for a Glock' gallery, so I haven't looked at them. You're a big guy, so the SR9 shouldn't be too difficult to conceal, even in the summer.  I'm a wheel gun guy when it comes to my carry, but from what I've heard and read you made a good choice for the $

I have had the pleasure of owning and firing both in 9mm. I loveed my Glock, but I love my S&W more.

You'll like the SR9. I've sold a ton of them and had zero complaints.

 

My biggest gripe with them is the stainless slide. Not a fan of two-tone for carry although it does look darn pretty in the display case or at the range. Good choice, I'm sure youll be pleased.

Got the SR9 added to my permit today, will be picking it up tomorrow, and after a cleaning/degreasing session hopefully will get to out to shoot with it soon.

I have carried the same Glock for over 10 years everyday now.  Guess I should go check out some others soon.  I am more of a long gun guy, and always just liked the fact my Glock can get beat to death in a holster and not worry about it.  My biggest problem going gun shopping is I get into the mood, and then I have to have them all!  Maybe I owe myself a late birthday present.......you guys are the devil!

I have never been one to revive a thread from the dead..................but let's revisit this saga from 1+ years ago.

The jist of it..................put a deposit on a glock, had second thoughts, about it, because I really REALLY liked the Shield. Rented a Shield from the local indoor range............didn't like it. Changed my mind on the Glock, bought a Ruger SR9 instead.

Fast forward a year and a few months. The SR9 has been solid,no complaints..........but I often find myself wishing for something else, and have toyed with selling it...............it's a great range toy/plinker, and home defense gun....but a little cumbersome for CC.

Several guys at work bought Shields.............I tried them again and was like.............hmmmm........maybe that rental gun was not a good example of the Shield........all the one's the guys at work have suddenly feel fantastic to me now..........as opposed to the rental gun a year or so ago. 

SO..........I though about selling the SR9 and getting a Shield............then I said  " to heck with that" kept the SR9, sold something else, and bought the Shield.

To wrap it up............ as of last Thursday, I now have a Shield LOL, and kept the SR9. I also had enough money left after selling what I sold to scratch another itch..............I came home with not only the Shield last Thursday, but also a new full size (5") Ruger 1911..........my 4th 1911 (only have 3 currently)

I hear good things on them. Especially the Smith.
