Biggz53 Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 Alright so I LOVE to swim a jig. Big fan of the dirty jigs and use them a lot. I can skip it to a degree but I'm looking for a bait designed to skip and swim. Anyone have any suggestions? I've found a few but nothing really addresses how well they skip, the head shape by definition will be different but looking for the best or both world and to have a single rod devoted to both. Quote
Logan S Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 Personally, I haven't found the skipping heads to be noticeably different from a bullet/swim style head (which is what I use for pretty much all my jig fishing). The best thing you can do to help a bait skip is to increase the surface area. Using a wide-body style trailer like a Beaver or something similar is the easiest way to do that on a jig. I normally use a pork trailer, but when skipping I'll put on a Beaver...That is a change you can notice . If you want to try a skipping jig for yourself, I'd recommend the AT Skipping jig. It didn't skip any better or worse for me...But it's a quality jig that can be used normally so it wouldn't be a waste. One other thing, skipping with a baitcaster does take a fair amount of practice/skill...Early on, I was trying all different types of heads looking for something that worked better. The reality was that I just wasn't that good at it yet....I don't do it regularly so I'm still not a pro at it, but I'm good enough now to know that it wasn't the head style that was holding me back before . 2 Quote
ABW Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 All Terrain Skip N Jig like the above poster. I've been using this jig for a while now, and it is very good at skipping. Also, you can fish it like a regular jig too. Quote
Biggz53 Posted January 27, 2015 Author Posted January 27, 2015 Thanks for the replies. I can skip a jig just fine, but usually use an arkie style head. I guess if I just keep working with the dirty jigs I will get it down eventually. Good idea adding a wider body, I usually throw a swim jig with a soft swim bait or swimming fluke. Beavers usually dont have action for my liking, I am thinking something more along the lines of a rage craw, or something similar with a longer body. Quote
druben Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 A good skipping combo for me has been the Omega Pitchin Jig or their Structure Jig because they have a flat bottom which causes the jig to stand up and consequently skip very well. For a trailer, I highly recommend the Netbait Kickin' B. This has been great for me on swim jigs. Lots of action in the legs and has a flat, wide body to aid in skipping. Quote
Super User HoosierHawgs Posted January 27, 2015 Super User Posted January 27, 2015 Another good option would be a Hart Tackle Justice Jig. I like them for swimming and skipping myself. Quote
Super User gardnerjigman Posted January 27, 2015 Super User Posted January 27, 2015 Omega makes one. Jewel swim jigs skip fairly well also. Quote
War Eagle 44 Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 I highly recommend the Netbait Kickin' B. This has been great for me on swim jigs. Lots of action in the legs and has a flat, wide body to aid in skipping. He beat me to it, lol. This is a fantastic trailer for skipping and swimming. Quote
Biggz53 Posted January 27, 2015 Author Posted January 27, 2015 that trailer does look great. Gardner, which omega jig are you referring too? Quote
