crankbank Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 In northeast Mass, it is snowing pretty hard and doesn't look to be slowing down until sometime early Wednesday morning. It is also quite windy so some of the drifts are pretty outrageous. Tough to say but I think we are around 18" so far. 3 Quote
Super User Felix77 Posted January 27, 2015 Super User Posted January 27, 2015 I woke up to nothing BUT it's snowing like hell and building. Is it the blizzard they suspected ... NO but I still got to go outside and plow the freakin driveway later. Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted January 27, 2015 Super User Posted January 27, 2015 6 feet of snow would make this historic, 2 or 3 feet makes it another bad Nor-Easter with an insane amount of media hype. It appears that media believes that their reporting of a weather event is what makes it historic. It's really not. A-Jay 2 Quote
Super User HoosierHawgs Posted January 27, 2015 Super User Posted January 27, 2015 Weather reporting today is a complete circus act. From naming every winter storm like they were hurricanes to calling every snow flurry "The storm of a life time" - it's disheartening. I have resorted to simply reading The National Weather service forecast on line - provides plain & simple predictions. Completely palatable without the hype. A-Jay More Meteorologist need to be like one of the local guys in my grandparents area... "Some of ya'll gonna get wet, some of ya'll ain't." 1 Quote
ClackerBuzz Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 A "blizzard" in the major metropolitan area's of the northeast is what I like to call............................just about every day in WNY from late fall to early spring. yes sir. I consider myself to live in floridelphia'. everyone in the south think philly is the north but it's paradise compared to the pounding my NY, MI and Canadian brothers take. It's the over the top sensationalizing of every single forecast that I choose not to participate in. I couldn't agree more! Horse race journalism has been around for ages but it's out of control with all the types of media we have now. an election can be a landslide but that doesn't sell advertising space. only a neck and neck, barn burner race till the end keeps'm tuned in! i read a Harvard study that said the OJ Simpson trial was the turning point where newsrooms went from being an automatic loss to being extremely profitable (prior to that only prime time and sports broadcasting made money). study said the crime rate actually has been steadily dropping since 2000 but the reporting of crime has increased by over 1000%. stay tuned....! 1 Quote
Smokinal Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 The latest, and of course we have to live in the "white zone"... Quote
Super User Sam Posted January 27, 2015 Super User Posted January 27, 2015 So glad the weather guys were more wrong than right about this one. Of course, Boston and New England got hit hard which is not good but the rest of the country was spared. Just remember, there was more snow in Siberia last year below the 60th parallel than unusual which means bad winters for the eastern US. And do we have another one heading our way next week??? 2 Quote
The one that got away Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 30+ inches at my house. I won't bore everyone with details. Let's just say it sucked. Can't wait for the leaky basement when it all melts. Quote
Mike2841 Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 Got just over 2 feet here in Boston, my dad got about 33" at his house. They convenietly only plowed up to the state troopers house on my street so it looks like I'm calling out today. Quote
Djf3864 Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 30" in my driveway, not too bad to clean up with the snow blower. Quote

wnybassman Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 This storm was a larger version of a situation we encounter much of the time here. When we have lake effect snow warnings here, they generally cover several counties. We all know not everyone in those counties will get the predicted snow totals, BUT we also know some places will. Forecasters know the potential is there, just can't pinpoint exactly where due to a little wind shift here and there. So I think they throw out the warnings in a little broader area to compensate for those shifts, especially if a major metro area could be involved. I personally feel weather forecasting has been good the past few years. Most of the time they are spot on, but sometimes they do blow it as well. 1 Quote
Super User Shane J Posted January 28, 2015 Super User Posted January 28, 2015 28" at my house. Regular Nor'Easter. I guess the blizzard classification is due to the sustained winds. No biggie either way. I'm just waiting now for the trail groomers to do their thing. Too deep to break the trail. 1 Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted January 28, 2015 Author Super User Posted January 28, 2015 This whole thing seems so silly to me. The weathermen missed landfall by a few hundered miles so the storm missed NYC for the most part, but still delivered a wallop to New England. I don't see the issue here. I'm so freakin' happy! Why would I want to sit around all day nd eat, nap, and watch football when I could be out working in the Heavy , wet snow! I'm having so much fun! I'm now waiting on a snowplow to plow ahead of me so I can go make repairs on a pole. Quote

scrutch Posted February 3, 2015 Posted February 3, 2015 I made it through. After about 30 hours straight I went home to sleep. I'm recovered now and ready for the next one. I think we got about two feet total here. We're pretty much back to normal here now. Quote
